190: Open Studio Tour 2009
Well, you know I am now really frantically sewing to finish all these projects for Quilt Market next week, and so with my day job taking up most of my time, there hasn’t been much time for reflection and blogging and making all the pictures look all prettified and what not….but I could not resist particitpating in the Quilting Arts Open Studio Virtual Tour 2009 !! I found our cheapy little digital video recorder and did a ten minute whirlwind tour of the studio that Linda and I share in our home. I didn’t clean, so it looks exactly like it does when I am working on too many things at once…which is most days….maybe if I get around to cleaning it, I will do another recording of it so you could see what it COULD look like.
So anyway without further ado, here is the Blue Nickel Fall 2009 Studio Tour…

And let me know if you have trouble seeing this, as loading it this morning is proving to be a pain in the butt (of course, because this is the day all of us who signed up for the tour said that we would have pix or vids of our spaces for you to enjoy)
Also let’s do a mini-giveaway while we are at it. I will give away 2 bags of colorful quilting scraps from my various projects..some of which will not even be in the stores for awhile yet…So let me know what you thought of the tour, and whatever else you want to tell me about what inspires you or what you like about this time of year….not to hard, is it. Not like my friend Jona who once made people respond in rhyme, which I might do soon, because I thought her responses were absolutely hilarious!
(PS, if the above video doesn’t seem to be working you can check out this pre-tour video I shot, it’s shorter and may be all you ever want to see of the studio anyway. )

it is so wonderful to see that i am not the only one who works with an older sewing machine and in such a “stimulating” environment! thanks for sharing!

I SO LOVE my little old Singer….she is about 18 years old give or take a few, was not all that expensive back then, and has served me well these many years…I would never trade her in for some hi-falutin’ new model!
Di
You’ve got lots of good stuff in there, lol. Thanks for the tour.

As long as you get stuff done, who cares how messy your studio is! I just cleaned mine and do you think I can find anything? It was much easier when it was messy! thanks for showing us around! fun to see the sneak peaks of the upcoming fabric lines!
and little things your working on.

There is so much inspiration out there in blogland before market, that all I need to do is look at all the designer’s and pattern makers blogs!! Would love some new scraps.

Scott — thanks so much for sharing your studio with us – so glad to see one that looks like my creative explosion, and not all perfectly neat! Cheers, Michelle

wow…tight quarters, but your work is wonderful so it’s clearly not a deterrent!

Thanks for the tour! It’s truly a fabric oddessy- I really can’t say what I liked best of the new fabrics you have, but there are some amazing ones! What a treat that you and your wife share a studio as well.

I can’t understand how you can create so wonderfully from that room! Wow. My frustration levels would be pretty high I think, having to move stuff every time I needed to find or do something. That’s just the deversity of people and how they work. My work environment is hardly ever tidy, but I’ve been trying to sort and organize so that I have ‘peace and calm’ when I walk in my sewing space….I use to almost dread being in there. I do love your inspiration areas though…it’s nice to see the things we love day in and day out…puts a smile on our souls….Any walls you could knock out or build out that would make the space double big for both of you? THat would be my first solution…I’d want to still work together, but need a bigger space.

What a fabulous studio to create in, Scott! Love the tchotchkes, the riot of colors and patterns, and charming gifts from your loved ones ~
Have a great time at Quilt Market!

Thanks for such an honest tour, Scott. It’s nice to see that your inspirations take up so much space. I haven’t unpacked mine from our move a year ago!! I hover between “clean slate” production and “smothered in colour” designing. I think you thrive in smothered! Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the peak into your world. A messy room shows a creative mind. (At least that’s what I convince myself)
I love all the sage and chocolate and orange and riot of colors in your studio…that inspires me. Mostly I love that you and Linda (yay crown) are surrounded by memories of your past and present loved ones. Keep creating!

Ha! I’m not the only one who didn’t clean up for the tour! Your studio space looks a lot like mine does when I’m actually working – hurray! Sometimes I’m inspired by seeing what other people are working on and sometimes that just gets me down. I’m such a gemini – I never know from one day to the next what I’m going to be doing 😛
The longer video was having trouble loading but I got to see the short version with very little hesitation. Thanks for sharing that :- )

Thanks for the tour – it just shows that you can create fabulous things no matter the size of the space. Thanks!

Great quilt room! It looks like it would be fun to play in there without worry. I find spaces like that stimulating. Don’t worry about cleaning it up. If it works for you, that’s what matters.
Greg
Nice studio. If any of your fabric needs a new home, let me know. Love the Singer, I used to have one just like it. Thanks for the tour.

I am speechless after that tour of your “space”, as there appeared to be no space at all! I too have a million stacks of things that I randomly love or need to obliterate. However, I draw the line when my cutting board is cluttered. That was a fascinating insight into a collection of stuff! Amazing, and you appear to be so calm amid the chaos. I wonder if I emptied all my baskets onto the shelves and bench spaces if I’d feel more in control of it all. Food for thought, thanks for sharing, kathy

Lack of bandwidth prevents me from viewing the video…DRATS! From the other posts, it sounds fabulous; hope you have a great time in Houston.

Nice Tour! Good to see my work space isn’t the only messy one. I really like the fabrics you have very good taste.

What a fun place to play!!
