Day Seven #12DaysofColor!

December 23rd, 2013

12 days of color logo

Yup…..Christmas has hit like Winter hits the East Coast….and it delayed these 12 Days of Color much more than I anticipated. Rather than grovel before you over and over again, let’s just move on to Day Seven shall we?

Today’s block is by Laurie Simpson.  I didn’t realize until just a few weeks ago that Laurie’s block was hand-pieced though. I almost panicked and thought I would just by pass over the block and give you some boring 9-patch blocks instead. But I just couldn’t do that, even though I certainly did not have time hand piece one block, let alone four. So I re-invented Lauie’s block with some tricky piecing that left out the center details, but gave it the same over all effect. You can find Laurie’s interview with Pat Sloan here, and the templates and layout to Laurie’s block here.

And here are my blocks. Again, I think I was in way too much of a hurry and you can see on the solids where there are many cut-off points. In the overall scheme of things, I don’t really care about that too much….That is a job for the Quilt Police.  Just consider my posting of these pictures as a sign that my recovery from perfectionism is coming along no matter how slowly.

Here is the Kona block done up in—in Graphite, Torch, and Riviera:

D12days Kona7

Here is the first  Jenean Morrison True Colors  from Free Spirit Block (Loving how the red pops against these others. Jenean’s True Colors line is the most “blendable” blenders in the series):

D12days JM1

Here is the third Jug or Not From Michael Miller Block (the “star” just hides away in this rendition…love that!):

D12days JoN3

Here is the Grunge From Moda block (this color combo says “winter woodlands” to me):

D12days G7

And here are the Aurifil threads of the day—four flosses!!  (2606, 1133, 2265, and 2235) :

D12days FLOSS 7

And same as the previous six days, leave a comment here on this post as well as all of the previous ones to be eligible each day for the daily prize as well as the big grand finale prizes.  You can tell me anything you want to. About this post, your favorite this or that, how your family is driving you crazy (or not) for the holidays, etc.

  2. melissaon 23 Dec 2013 at 2:11 pm

I like the look of the grunge one best. I still love that Jug or Not? fabric, though!

  3. Vicki Hon 23 Dec 2013 at 4:32 pm

My fav block is the True Colors. It’s cold outside..

  4. Janiceon 23 Dec 2013 at 4:33 pm

I love thread. It’s so bad, I just pickup the colors I like and when it’s time to quilt a quilt I have to go buy more.

  5. Sandy Kon 23 Dec 2013 at 4:34 pm

Love the colors you chose for the Grunge block.

  6. Maraon 23 Dec 2013 at 4:56 pm

So glad I’m not the only one that has trouble “keeping up” with my posting, really like the Jenean Morrison True Colors.

  7. Joon 23 Dec 2013 at 5:13 pm

I am loving those thread colors

  8. Alexison 23 Dec 2013 at 6:11 pm

I adore every block in Grunge.

  9. Bethanyon 23 Dec 2013 at 7:36 pm

Love the solids block! Glad to hear that you are overcoming your perfectionism…I understand how hard it is to do!

  10. Ceciliaon 23 Dec 2013 at 7:36 pm

I like Jenean Morrison’s block and the Grunge block. Thanks for persevering, I enjoy seeing your color combinations.

  11. Sarah Veeon 23 Dec 2013 at 7:56 pm

Love the bold Kona, and the jug or not this time. Your thread photo is really cool with the turquoise background!

  12. Pamon 23 Dec 2013 at 8:33 pm

Wow, I admire your ability to sew these complex blocks so quickly. I spent the entire day sewing a pair of oven mits and some potholders for a Christmas gift. My dear husband pointed out that I could buy them at the dollar store for a dollar, but he just doesn’t get it. :) Thanks for sharing your creations!

  13. audreyon 23 Dec 2013 at 9:30 pm

Once again I’m totally struck by the impact of the solid fabrics but then I see the subtlety of using the prints in True Colors and I’m IN LOVE. :) I guess I just like the details. :)

  14. Audrey Goodwinon 23 Dec 2013 at 10:05 pm

Those blocks are so playful today. Kona looks like the Flag of a foreign country. True Colors reminds me of a wonderful Christmas Day jello salad. Jug or Not is inside my head right now, and Grunge make me want a peanut butter cookie (the kind with the melted kiss in the middle). In each post, as well as today, I haven’t seen a thread color I didn’t love or could not use to the end of the spool. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication!

  15. Connie Cainon 23 Dec 2013 at 10:06 pm

I like the Grunge one also. Merry Christmas

  16. Maryellenon 23 Dec 2013 at 10:32 pm

First, great idea to change the block to make it on machine. I do love the solids! I haven’t played with solids much. I’m such a floral/print girl. Yay for continuing! And sharing the flosses. They look so pretty.

  17. Margareton 23 Dec 2013 at 11:40 pm

Even though the Jug or Not fabric doesn’t really work well for the star, I love it!

  18. Amy @ Sew Incredibly Crazyon 24 Dec 2013 at 12:01 am

Grunge and that block were made for each other. ;). The Aurifil colors are like a ray of sunshine. Merry Christmas!

  19. Valerie Boudieron 24 Dec 2013 at 4:39 am

    Threads are beautiful

  20. Sophieon 24 Dec 2013 at 4:51 am

The combination of neutrals in the grunge block really appeals to me.

Christmas here will be quiet and low key (kind of like your grunge block) :-)

  21. Carrieon 24 Dec 2013 at 5:27 am

I enjoy looking at all the different combinations that everyone uses. I am an artist and bright colors always entice me. For so long quilts were merely done in muted tones but after hopping from one blog to another I am intriqued with designing some art quits and your choices in floss have my fingers wanting to use them on some quilts.

  22. Janice Mc Larenon 24 Dec 2013 at 6:41 am

My husband would love the kona block. He loves blue and orange- Go Bears!

  23. rosaon 24 Dec 2013 at 8:24 am

  27. Jeanneon 24 Dec 2013 at 12:52 pm

I love all Aurifil thread, it is the only brand I use.

  28. Joyce Carteron 24 Dec 2013 at 5:40 pm

Awesome blocks! I really am loving the Kona block. The solid colors are so striking. And I think the Grunge looks so masculine. It would make a great quilt for a boy of any age. (BTW_I think making anything perfect is highly over rated. The way I see it is, if it looks good, then it is perfect to me.) I think you did an awesome job on the blocks today.

  29. Janiceon 24 Dec 2013 at 7:04 pm

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all! That Kona block makes me think of the Denver Broncos! It looks beautifully done to me! I’m glad to hear that you’re giving yourself a break from perfection! Me too! It’s all about managing expectations, right? I really love the Grunge block again. I’m going to have check the after-Christmas wish list for some of that!

  30. Sandy Don 24 Dec 2013 at 7:12 pm

The Grunge block is my favorite. Merry Christmas

  31. Allyson LePenskeon 24 Dec 2013 at 7:22 pm

True Colors and Grunge rank the top for me once again. Great color choices. :0)

  32. Cathy Gon 24 Dec 2013 at 7:29 pm

well, tonight I def like the Jenean Morrison print True Colors. Really pretty and just goes together. Thanks for your posts this week, Scott. Really feel like I learned something about myself and fabric. Merry Christmas!

  33. usairdollon 24 Dec 2013 at 7:30 pm

Love the Jug or Not block. Can’t see the star but love the position of the fabrics. Grunge block is another winner!

    Merry Christmas!

  34. barbara woodson 24 Dec 2013 at 7:34 pm

By the time Christmas is over I will be glad

Grunge is once again my favourite

The Jean Morrison block is so pretty. My whole family just left after spending the day and I miss them all!

  37. Wendaon 24 Dec 2013 at 8:25 pm

Love the grunge colors and the Jug or Not fabric.

  38. Margaret Schindleron 24 Dec 2013 at 8:56 pm

Continue to love that grunge one.

  39. Pattyon 24 Dec 2013 at 10:10 pm

The True Colors Block is pretty, and the Grunge is also. I really don’t like Jug or Not because it’s too busy. With all the work it takes to make the blocks, I want to be able to see the star. It’s really interesting to see 1 block in 4 different fabric lines. Thanks.

  40. Susan the farm quilteron 24 Dec 2013 at 10:26 pm

Loving Grunge Have a blessed Christmas!

  41. Elizabeth Johnsonon 24 Dec 2013 at 10:41 pm

I like the colors of the first two blocks today! Thank you

  42. heidion 24 Dec 2013 at 11:07 pm

Great job adapting the block. This is my favorite Jug or not so far:-)

  43. Lizzieon 24 Dec 2013 at 11:27 pm

Wow, as much as I loved the jug or not yesterday, it doesn’t do it on this block for me…. But wow, those first two versions really sing! I am also a recovering perfectionist! Good times! Thanks for doing and showing all these blocks!

  44. tubakkon 25 Dec 2013 at 4:27 am

Block number 2 is lovely. But as usual block 3 is also calling my name. Merry Christmas!

  45. shirley teneron 25 Dec 2013 at 9:23 am

I didnt know the floss was on wood spools, how romantic

  46. Sueon 25 Dec 2013 at 11:28 am

Love the True colors block, that white background fabric is fabulous – might have to do some post-Christmas shopping!!

  47. Wendi Lauren Dickherberon 25 Dec 2013 at 5:29 pm

Merry Christmas.I like the one made with the blender fabrics

  48. Wendi Lauren Dickherberon 25 Dec 2013 at 5:30 pm

Merry Christmas. I like the one made with the blender fabrics

  49. Jessica P.on 26 Dec 2013 at 7:01 am

Wow. You really are playing with color in the blue, red, white, grey, etc. block. I would be so afraid to work with that much color at once. It really does look good though.

  50. Judyon 26 Dec 2013 at 3:01 pm

Great blocks. I am really enjoying your 12 days of color.

  51. Heatheron 27 Dec 2013 at 2:20 pm

good job on your interpretation of this block. The more you show of the grunge fabric the more I like it.

  52. Jane Fon 28 Dec 2013 at 8:42 am

More and more I like the look of solid color blocks, although the true colors blenders are very attractive. Thanks for sharing.

  53. Rose Smithon 28 Dec 2013 at 11:52 am

Such a pretty block, with some lovely fabric choices. Loving the pretty patterns in the True Colours from Free Spirit range, they really enhance this block :-) xx

  54. dianna eickhornon 28 Dec 2013 at 12:40 pm

Love the Grunge! But, that Jug or Not reminds me of Picasso! No wonder I’m in love with that fabric

  55. Jeanetteon 28 Dec 2013 at 3:15 pm

I love the ‘button’ look fabric in the True Color line. Oh and how did you know I am a sucker for a nice burnt orange? =o)

  56. nikkion 28 Dec 2013 at 4:29 pm

It fascinates me how much one block pattern can be changed just a little to make a new block. Scott you have a truly amazing gift!

  57. MaryBethon 28 Dec 2013 at 6:12 pm

I’ve always been a fan of stars. I like the browns the best.

  58. Lauraon 29 Dec 2013 at 8:36 am

I wouldn’t normally buy the jug fabric but the blocks do look great with it.

  59. Becky Greeneon 29 Dec 2013 at 9:52 am

Good point about the blendability of JM’s True Colors line – agree completely!

    LOVE AURIFIL TOO!

  65. Lori Mon 30 Dec 2013 at 11:04 am

This has convinced me—I MUST find some Grunge fabrics! those are still my favorite blocks! the solids are especially nice too!

  66. Janiceon 30 Dec 2013 at 12:00 pm

It’s amazing that it doesn’t even seem like the same block with the different fabrics.

  67. KellySon 30 Dec 2013 at 3:01 pm

Grunge block on this one! I don’t think I realized how many different colors they come in!

  68. Sarahon 30 Dec 2013 at 3:50 pm

I did not see my family for the holidays so they could not drive me crazy! It was nice.

  69. Lisa Marieon 30 Dec 2013 at 6:36 pm

The Jug or Not fabrics are very interesting and make the block look totally different.

  70. KarenVon 30 Dec 2013 at 11:12 pm

Again, so interesting to see how changing the fabric makes such a huge difference in the feeling of the block.

  71. Judy Forkneron 31 Dec 2013 at 1:23 am

The grunge is growing on me!

  72. Kayon 31 Dec 2013 at 5:55 am

I love doing EPP, it is actually my favourite way to sew as I find it very relaxing. It does take a long time to make a whole quilt though.

  73. nadia wilsonon 31 Dec 2013 at 11:42 am

I’ve never seen Aurifil floss! Look at how awesome those colours shine! and are those wooden spools??? :-)

  74. Cathy Cameronon 31 Dec 2013 at 11:45 am

Holidays are somber this year due to my Dad (the anchor of our family) passing away mid-summer! Chance to win something is great!
