280: Finally…my turn to Palooza!!

280: Finally…my turn to Palooza!!

Yeah! It’s finally my turn to Palooza with you!!  If you have been paloozing with us, you have 8 blocks done and here you are at my little ole blog for Number 9.   If you haven’t dropped by the Blue Nickel before then welcome to the neighborhood, I hope you will stop by later as well!!….and if you have already been visiting me, then welcome back!!

To begin with..I have been checking out my fellow bloggers tutorials on this project…..and just so you know….my background will change often on this….and everything may not be so neat and tidy….I believe things will be clear, but perhaps a little “loose” …just so you know…(don’t hate me for my messyness… ur freedom, okay?)

And now on with the show!

Block #9 —  Lemonade Stand

To BEGIN with….make sure you are using a very accurate 1/4″ seam (even a scant 1/4″ seam on the geese if you are a little bit too speedy and less precise ….like the guy that heads up this joint)

First cut two  3.25″x3.25″  squares of  Sunkissed Lemonade 5445-22

Then cut them diagonally twice as shown….hey! There are 8 friendly little geese.

Now cut eight 1 7/8″ x 1 7/8″ squares from Sukissed Misty Grey 5440-15 (the wordy grey print)

Then cut each of these in half diagonally as shown (this is, by the way, the VERY BEST way to cut a sandwich also in case you were wondering about that):

Then sew one sandwich half to one short side of each goose and press as shown in the series of pictures below:

(warning the first picture reads like a Andorian love story….from right then left and down and then up)

Next sew the another sandwich half to the geese as shown in the pictures below:

and then press that half as shown:

Voila! you should have 8 geese units that look similar to this one:

With this method I invariably have to do a little trimming to make sure it is  1.5″ high and 2.5″ wide….but I am sure you will be much more accurate than that!

But just in case here’s what I had to do…

Then sew two geese together as shown here:

and then do this 3 more times for a total of four flying geese units…

——————————–

Now it’s time to do some more cutting…

Cut…….

  • four 3.5″ x 3.5″ squares from Sunkissed  Limeade 5447-11
  • five  2.5″ x 2.5″ squares from Sunkissed Limeade 5447-11
  • four 1.5″ x 6.5″ rectangles from Sunkissed Misty Grey 5443-25 (stripey grey)
  • four 1.5″ x 6.5″ rectangles from Sunkissed Misty Grey 5445-15 (wordy grey)
  • and (not pictured below…sorry) four 1.5″ x 6.5″ rectangles from Moda Bella Solid Light Lime 9900-100

Oh look here comes one of those nifty background changes I told you about …pretend you are at the theatre taking in a play or something…. it will seem more highbrow that way….

Now sew the four flying geese units that you made above  to the five 2.5″ squares of the lime gingham as shown below:

Unpressed from the front:

Unpressed from the back:

Pressed from the back:

Next scene (i.e. backdrop change)….finished center of the block from the front.

Oops…flashback…back to this backdrop….

Sew the stripey grey rectangle and the wordy grey rectangle to each side of the solid light lime strip as shown below:

Make four total of these:

Okay, next sew two of these strip units to top and bottom of the center unit as shown below

  .

…(make that partially shown….I ended up only getting this one picture of this step before sending the block to John for the final quilt):

Next sew the remaining two strip  pieces to the the 3.5″ squares of Limeade 5447-11 as shown below:

From the back..pressing to the wordy and stripey grey sections.

and then sew the sides to the front as shown…and you have your very own Lemonade Stand Block….

Oh and this WILL be on a PDF file…but I didn’t get it done in time….please come back here and when it is done I will have a link here and on my Download tab at the top!  Most sincere apologies to my new and old friends for not having it ready today!

FINALLY!!  Here is the file for the PDF form….warning…it will take a bit of time to downlad…..give it at least 10 minutes….okay??

The next block in the Palooza is by the fabulously talented Amy Ellis for Block #10 going live on Thursday February 24th!

I have been enjoying seeing everyone’s blocks and can’t wait to see what you do with mine!  Feel free to load it on my Blue Nickel Page as well as the Blockapalooza  page on Flickr!

oh, and the Andorian love story mentioned above?  I completely made that up to make up for my lack of  foresight in planning that photo…but if you made it this far, you probably don’t care….and since you love me that much, you deserve the truth….

Happy Sewing!!

Scott

Is there anything better than a great looking block, a clear tutorial and lots and lots of l(ing)ol along the way? I don’t think so. And yes, I got to the end… and only cared in that there was more laughing.

I’m not even Palooza-ing and I love your block Scott! The strength of the check with the daintiness of the geese in the center is a great combination!

I notice a lot of quilters using geese in their blocks and I just thought I would leave a comment with an easy speed pieceing method that makes 4 geese blocks at a time.
Check out speed piecing “METHOD B” found here:
    http://www.quilterscache.com/H/Howtomakegeese.html

I know you can find this method on other sites as well but this was the first one I came across. I LOVE this method.

    Thanks for the terrific block!

Hey Sarah, there are so many ways to make a flying goose block, aren’t there? Our Paloozer Kaye used the method you mentioned in your comment here on Block # 5 http://tinyurl.com/4k4fydb and I thought it looked intriguing as well. For my block, I used what I have always done, but they do demand some care when cutting and pressing and the need a very exact if even a scant 1/4″ seam. Thanks for your link, I am sure many will appreciate it. So glad you like the block!!

Hi, Scott, I hope I can get as precise as you can..I am still learning, make garments, and quilting is a bit different, lol..love your block, I just found this! Where have I been? I was looking at the Star Stitch rules and saw the Quilt Dad link and so here I am, downloading the blocks so I can make them, as they are all so wonderful and will help me learn precision-piecing..but I cannot get your block’s pdf to download? I tried twice, it locks up and I have to run task manager to unlock it? HELP..I will bookmark and when I get to this block, if you still have it up, I can follow along online–thanks alot!
