Quilt Uberfest Special!!

October 17th, 2011

I hope you have had fun Uberfest- ing with me and my bloggy buds.   I was a little bit worried that we would get a late pull-out, because life just happens, you know?  So I talked to my friend Sarah Fielke, and she volunteered to to a back up block! Wasn’t that kind?  Click here to get her directions.  Since this was a last minute thing,  Sarah designed block and wrote up directions, but there was no time to get the fabric to her.
So with great delight, I bring you Sarah’s bonus block #17…..

In hindsight, I think those striped triangles should have been on the outside corners….or all of the dark triangles another fabric altogether.

When we get it all of the blocks put together and quilted…we will let you know how you can enter to win it by buying a raffle ticket  to a great cause….all of which is to be planned still…

I know that I have many winners to announce to various things from last week and the few weeks before.  The first week (which would be last week if you are trying to keep track of things) back to the DayJob ended up being even more time-consuming than I had anticipated….so I am pretty beat up from it still .. I hope I can get to announcing everything on Wednesday this week….

thanks for your patience on that front…and so while you are waiting you can hunt for the Blue Nickel posts that are currently running giveaways…

Peace Out….

Blue Bumble Bean Basic Pattern…

September 10th, 2011

That would be the BBBBP for short….or BeeeeeeP….

Very quickly, these are some layouts  for Bumble Basic Blues block I developed for the Bumble Beans Basics Blue Nickel Block Drive that I came up with here....

I already have 14 blocks to start this fun project….I will take pictures as I go….and remember you don’t HAVE to do this block, you can send me any type you want as long as it is 10.5” square… thanks for all the help you have already done for those people back in the Big Apple!!

Bumble Beans Basics!

September 4th, 2011

Okay….here’s an opportunity for you to do MULTIPLE things.

  • clean out your sewing room/studio

  • get some new ideas

  • help a bunch of other people

  • feel good about helping said other peeps

  • get a chance to win more fabric….to help fill that space you cleaned out above…..

Blue Nickel Studios has joined up with Victoria Findlay Wolfe and Pat Sloan

to see how many quilts we can all put together to help with the Bumble Bean Basics Quilt Drive.  I will be donating a quilt from my collection of works toward the cause and I would like to have your help in making one or more quilts as well.

And here’s how you can help.  You create a 10.5” x 10.5” unfinished quilt block and send it to me here:

Scott Hansen, Blue Nickel Studios,  1315 Gohr Road,  Sultan, WA 98294

I will put the blocks together into one or more quilts (48 blocks per quilt) get them quilted up and sent back to NYC for the Basics Peeps to get distributed hopefully before the worst weather shows up.

For every block you send I will put your name in a bucket to win 10 fat quarters of fabric.  If I get more than 48 blocks, everyone’s names get put in another bucket for another 10 fat quarters of fabric.  (okay, it may be the same bucket, but you get the idea)

I will be posting a pattern for a special “Blue Nickel Basics” 10.5” square block  that you can make and send for this event later this week….but you don’t have to wait for that….just start sewing your favorite 10.5” unfinished block now, or you can use those lost and forgotten blocks sitting in your sewing basket.  If they aren’t quite 10.5” square, add a border to them or something, put your name on it, and slap it in the mail to me.    Or you can wait for my “special” block that I will get posted here hopefully by Friday the 9th.

So let’s see how we can help the many homeless peeps in NYC and you get a chance to win some free new fabrics for your stash!  I will take pictures and post them on my blog as we go along on this project.  Drawing will be held on September 30th and winner announced then….so go get sewing!!

Or you can make your own quilt and send it straight to them to help….Here are some tutorials that Victoria has gathered together for you….or you could also work up one of my many free patterns too….

If  you already have a finished quilt that can be sent….send it to:

Basic Housing, Inc.
Attn: Robert Gonzalez / BBINC
540 East 180th Street,
Bronx, NY 10457

Please include your
name,
address
and email
and the value of the materials you used.

286: Modern Relief Japan…..

April 4th, 2011

The best way to say this is here:

Click on the picture above to find out more about this awesome raffle of amazing quilts for a wonderful cause…Lots of people have been working on this, and I think it is so great how quilters come together to help others…  Pretty cool stuff.  I will have a quilt up in this raffle, but I haven’t taken a picture of it yet, because well, you know, things are NUTS around here lately.   Feels like it gets busier everyday too!!

Anyway!  All the proceeds go to Mercy Corps and here are some basics that I copied from our cover page over at Modern Relief:

Here’s how the raffle will work:

  • Every Monday, (April 4th -May 16th, 2011) a new group of quilts will be featured here on ModernRelief.com

  • To enter for a chance to win one of the quilts featured, you will click on the PayPal button that will be located on the top right column of this blog. This will bring you to the Modern Relief PayPal account.

  • Donations are unlimited, so please feel free to give till your heart’s content.

  • Every $10.00 donation gives you one chance to win any of the quilts featured during the raffle period (April 4th – May 16th, 2011)

  • Multiple wins by a single person will be allowed, so you do have the chance to win more than one quilt

  • Winners of the quilt raffle will be chosen by a random number generator after May 16th, 2011, and the list of winners will be posted here. We will also contact the winners at the email address listed on the PayPal account.

  • All donations received will be donated to Mercy Corps

Here is the first batch of quilts!! What awesome prizes huh??  And you know your money is going for a great cause!!

There will be about 90 quilts (we think, they aren’t all posted yet) total in this raffle, so to me that seems like a lot better odds than a state lottery!

So that’s it in a nutshell….The quilt I will be donating actually hails from another area far away from the US….It is a  60 degree style quilt that I made years ago for my friend Sara Nephew’s book out of African fabrics.  This quilt actually didn’t get in the book due to space issues, but it is a fun one that I am hoping you will be happy to win!   I am not sure of the date I will get to talk more about it, but it will likely be early May.

Just a few gratuitous pictures this post….sorry…but future posts are planned here with lots of pictures, some book reviews, and some designer interviews as well, and maybe even some “big” news of sorts…....  Oh yeah, and for all you lurkers out there….GIVEAWAYS!!

I knew that would get your attention…

Stay tuned peeps!!

Scott

259: {Modern} Relief…cause the world needs it….

November 28th, 2010

Hey there!!  I hope you had a great Thanksgiving weekend!  We did here at the Blue Nickel.  Went to my parents on the big day, and then worked Friday and part of Saturday at the DayJob (it’s retail…so Black Friday and all you know) ....But I know you blog-reader types are all a gaga over the Cyber Monday deals, aren’t you??

Well while you are there at home in your PJ’s shopping your hearts out,  please consider dropping a ten-spot or more for Modern Relief.   See below for the details, but I just wanted to shout out to the instigator of this great event.  Heather, thanks so much for reminding us all that the world needs all the help it can get, and we can all do our part.   I missed the party on this one for donating a quilt, but Heather let me join up for the next one, so I will have one or two quilts that you could win while you are helping out others ….what a win, win situation, huh??

Now why have I told you to buy a raffle ticket too?  It is not helping my chances by any means, but I just am letting you know, cause I love peeps in general, you and the folks being helped by the money raised….but you don’t have much time to buy your ticket, the deadline is December 1st!!   That and there are like 20 quilts to win if I counted right…

Best of  luck to you and to me!!

I will be back later in the week to share some more….I have been busy in the studio….let’s hope I really get something posted….If you want to get the “latest” always on my antics, follow me on Twitter.   Then if you want to talk direct, you can alway DM me….although if I am particularly chatty on Twitter, the work in the studio is directly hampered by the same chatter (in adverse ways of course) ....Happy Cyber Sunday/Monday to all and to all a good nite!

{ Modern } Relief is a simple concept. We are Modern Quilters uniting through the holiday season by bringing the warmth of our quilts and the warmth of your hearts together for others in need. This season, 2010, we will be supporting World Vision. We hope YOU will join us in taking a stand against hunger by participating in our fundraising raffle. Please let me introduce to you World Vision.

World Vision is leading the effort to end hunger.

In the next seven seconds, another hungry child will die.

World Vision is on the front lines of the fight against hunger. Today — and every day — we’ll distribute nearly 600 metric tons of emergency food aid, nourishing the hungry. We’ll give local farmers the seeds, tools, and training they need to grow their own food and feed their own communities. And we will plead the cause of the hungry in halls of power all over the world.

Please join us in creating a world without hunger — a world in which no child dies for want of nutritious food. This site offers in-depth information on hunger, its causes, and how it can be stopped. You can learn more about key hunger-related issues and share what you discover with friends and family. Use this link to begin your journey.
Please meet the members of this season’s event and view their donations that they have generously provided to this fundraiser raffle.
