244: quick like a bunny….

admin August 24th, 2010

okay quick isn’t really the right word, but I am sneaking this post in as quickly as I can, because I wanted to share this little sketch I started for the Hoop Up! swap I joined, and just pop in and say hi….neither of which I have much time for this week!  (I cannot or will not even begin to tell you how swamped I am….and most of it isn’t the fun, muddy, playtime type of swamped either…a little, but not much).....

Anyhoo…here is my beginning sketch for my base piece for my theme “Better Cottages and Gardens”

Very quickly drawn on a SHORT break at the DayJob….but I think I like the direction it’s going…kinda wonky, kinda whimsical, kinda silly….a lot like me…(only I wish that I could be sillier at times….I get to serious for my own good way to often…ask ANYONE who knows me well!)

Okay if I go on and on and on anymore this won’t be “quick like a bunny”

Sew long for now my friends!!

Thanks for stopping by….

okay, really I am signing off now…

bye!

Just as I was going to post this…it got sent to the trash!!  AAUUUGHHHH…..thank God for “restore”....okay now I am really leaving you….ciao!

243: The things I get myself into…..

admin August 20th, 2010

and I only wish one of those things would be the suit I got married in 20+ years ago…but alas it is not…

But this is what I have gone and done….I joined another swap…and not just any swap… a NON quilting swap ....this swapto be exact.  Mostly because my friend John twisted my arm….no, not really….but it wasn’t because I needed something else to do…I think I signed up mostly for the variation of this art form…....

All I have to show for it so far is my inspiration piece….this vintage stitched house ….   But as I go I will share with you what I make and what my swap-mates send.  My theme is “Better Cottages and Gardens”.   The other themes are “Weird Science“, “Monsters“, “Owls with Attitude“, and “Modern Classics Fun!”   I get to design ideas for these themes….I am thinking colorful amoebas for the first, and some funky, assymetrical creatures for the 2nd. The other two will be a bit more challenging to me, as I think there are probably more “real” looking things to do there, but I am excited to try my hand at them all!!

Other than that I have a bunch of things I am working on…two more quilts for Free Spirit Fabrics, a Moda Bake Shop recipe, and some other things that are hush, hush at the moment…..

and oh, yeah, we need to get firewood for the winter, and I need to try to find a painter to paint the upper half of the house before winter, as I just don’ t have time to get up there, and it needs some caulking and painting pretty bad in some places…..as well as still helping Gimpy Linda get things done around here…

along with going to the DayJob to keep some steady income coming in…..blah, blah, blah…...

Peace out my friends…..

Scott

219: Man-quilters Unite!

admin April 15th, 2010

So, I am really, really late at posting about the latest Doll Quilt Swap 8  I like these swaps because they are total ”playtime” for me, and if I want to do some experimenting, they are fun to share…so This time our swap”mama” (Kimmie) as she was called,   threw the only three guys in the swap all together.  I gave to Ryan, Ryan gave to John, and John gave to me.   Pretty fun to see how each of us went about “mod”  fabrics differently. This is what I sent to Ryan…

Here is the back plus a little bundle of goodies I sent along for fun…

And then here is the front of the quilt I sent Ryan.  I told Ryan that he had better appreciate the red Wonderland Scissor fabric from Moda...cause it was the first time I used it, and I TOTALLY LOVE  print!!  It was very hard to part with…what? like you don’t understand that or something?   Somewhere around here, I have this beautiful sage reproduction fabric that I still totally love from about 12 years ago…..even though I have gone “brighter” these days, I still adore that fabric….whenever I find it again, I can tell you it will delight me….   :)

So, then John sent this quilt to me!  I was so happy to have him be my swap partner, because I have loved his choices in fabrics for some time now..

and I like that he left those wide linen stripes plain…I have plans to add vintage and new buttons and beads in that space…

John also sent a little goodie pack with his quilt—A Charley Harper calendar and the coolest pencil ever….

see what I mean about the pencil??  THANKS SO MUCH for this cool touch, Johnny Q!!

and this fabric in the top corner..I think it is from Spoonflower, but I am not sure…maybe John will drop a comment and tell us about it in there….

Well that’s it for now…I still have a couple pictures from Easter to post, and an entry about my “little” 17 year old son’s quiet-at-home-with-a-mega-meaty-pizza party….wait until you see this pizza he designed…incredible!!

214: Spring is Comin’…..

admin March 7th, 2010

Last weekend, it was just so pretty out, so I grabbed these flowers to share with you.  I love Spring and the hopeful, cheerful message it brings that Winters don’t last forever, and more beautiful days are ahead.

.........................................................

And of course, Spring wouldn’t be complete without these in the lawn, would it?  If it weren’t for these and Moss, I would probably have a dirt/rock yard….ok, we have SOME grass, but not the pristine country club kind, that’s for sure.

I am out of the doldrums already…thanks to those who wished me well during that time.  I knew it wouldn’t last forever, and I know those days will come back again…

..................................................................

One more quick thing to share, and then I gotta get back to ….cue the ominous music …..the “Project List”  ....

A couple quick snaps of my project for the Doll Quilt Swap 8 .... of course I am behind, what else?  I had these grand aspirations of getting it done and sent on time….but..well, yeah, it didn’t happen….but here are some snapshots, and to my Doll Quilt Swap 8 partner go out big apologies….but I will send extra fabric so you can score there…

And just so you know Swap Partner, I haven’t used the scissor fabric for anything for myself yet, so I hope you really know how special it is for me to put it into your quilt, Ok??

Happy Spring everyone! Talk to you soon…hug someone you love, and if they are close enough to kiss….then give them one of those too!!

210: Blue is not my favorite color….

admin February 5th, 2010

.....but since it is in the studio’s name, I have tended to pay more attention to it recently…here’s an example…

I made this last weekend when I was cleaning  moving stuff around in the studio….seahorsin' around

The frame is some old “rubberized” embroidery hoop kit thingie with the little hook…the seahorse was some souvenir thing from an ocean trip years back.  I think the fabric is from Art Gallery Fabrics, but I am not sure… and Linda had the microbeads.  I added a little glue and invisible thread…and there it was: instant seaside art for our half-bath with the beach theme.

Other news here at the blue nickel…..Cadbury Mini Eggs are out on the shelves…and working against this plan most torturously!!  (okay I am just joking on that last link, alright? I am not dumb enough to believe that is so “easy”)

Back to the studio for an evening of fun!  maybe even something productive…after I gnosh on a few more Mini Eggs though….

203: Goodnight 2009

admin December 31st, 2009

Well here it is New Year’s Eve again…didn’t we just have that??  We are getting ready to watch UP and Inkheart with the kids, but I wanted to get the “big 200” winners announced here before the New Year….It was REALLY NOT easy to choose, now I know why people choose randomly.  Thank you all for the wonderful descriptions of Bungalow and Cottage….I was realy surprised at some of the responses.   The biggest surprise was the tropical image of Bungalow…It makes sense to me now, but I hadn’t even associated it with the beach, sand, and coconuts…...I ended up giving little “titles” to each of the winners for why they stood out to me….

so with very little pomp, and possibly a picture or two later here are the winners in no particular order…

In the Style category, 5. Tabitha O. who wrote on Dec 21, 2009 at 10:01 am…  I loved the overall feel of your comment Tabitha, it was very much what I was looking for in style and content…

In the Hollyhock category, 13. Shelley who wrote on Dec. 22, 2009 at 11:20am…Just to show a “long” answer wasn’t necessary…I picked Shelley’s for the mention of Hollyhocks….which you don’t hear much about these days, and we seem to have the dickens of a time growing them without loosing them to aphids…

In the Colors category, 25. Monique who wrote on Dec. 22, 2009 at 7:50 pm….and the color that caught my eye was “ripe wheat”....I mean really….Monique do you work at a paint company naming colors??   Oh, and Monique also used the word “Sticklyesque” which I am not positive is a word, but would be something that I would say…..

In the Hep cats category, 28. Mab who wrote on Dec. 22, 2009 at 11:16pm ….who yes, won simply for the use of the  phrase “hep cats”  and the word “swingy”....

In the Storytime category, 51. SewLindaAnnon who wrote on Dec. 23, 2009 at 12:23 pm …..I felt like she was telling me a little tidbit about her life at the same time was answering a general question of sorts….

In the Form category, 55. Sherry who wrote on Dec. 23, 2009 at 2:34 pm….Sherry’s entry reminded me of a very long Haiku poem..with beautiful descriptions to boot…..

And last but not least, in the Verbosity category, 61. dolores wrote an incredibly detailed and complete description that still blows me away..

Thank you so much to ALL of you for entering…..Again, I thoroughly enjoyed reading all the thoughts and 200th blog blessings!!   Here’s to a great 2010 to come and to all you, my “e-friends” as my family calls you!!

And to finish off the new year, here is a picture I drew on the back of the kids menu with a limited selection of crayons, for Linda when we were on our 20th wedding annivesary trip to the ocean…

Rustic charm at it’s finest, eh??   (yeah, I need to work on the faces piece, huh? but it was with cheap crayons, ok??)

201: One more sleep til Christmas…

admin December 24th, 2009

And the day I have given myself to read all your wonderful comments! I have really enjoyed the glances I have snuck at the comments coming in for my 200th Post Extravaganza.  I have been very surprized at the comments regarding the word “bungalow” but I will not reveal my thoughts on that until after the drawing is over tonight.  A BIG NOTE here regarding comments on my blog…..it is set up so that I need to look at them before they get posted in order to prevent spam, so don’t think that you haven’t posted a comment when you thought you did.  It is probably just setting in the queque waiting for me to approve it…and since I am often at work, where I don’t have the time to go in and do that, often they will wait until evening.

So I hope that everyone doing their last minute Christmas shopping will be calm and relaxed, cause you know it really will be okay if everything isn’t perfect….maybe even better, right?   I mean look at Mr. Moon here…peaceful as can be with a giant ”mole” shaped like an upside down heart…   moth in the moon  okay so that comment is weird, but I needed a caption for this picture.  Tell you what if you send me a better caption (and THAT won’t be hard, I will send you some brand new fabric love from the latest lines)   So you could call this giveaway number two!!   Deadline for a caption will be New Year’s Day….I will post a picture of the prize for this one between now and New Years Day!....so start thinking up something clever and charming, okay?!

Later my friends!   S.

admin August 25th, 2009

Here is one of those mostly picture posts…hope you don’t mind… I got signed up for Doll Quilt Swap 7, and my swap partner likes owls..so I found some Owls by Amy Schimler...and started playing….I paid absolutely no attention to any rules…it wasn’t easy, but I like the results….Hope my DQS7  buddy does!

179: On the Outside…

admin July 19th, 2009

Okay,  yes two posts in one day….I just wanted to share this “beginning” of a painting that I started on today.

abstract flower1

Actually I sketched it weeks ago…and though it is coming out “chunkier” than I envisioned, I rather like it.  So here is my first (actually second) piece of “Outsider” art that I have begun.  It makes me smile, and you just never know what may happen next….it only takes a step here and a step there…and there you go on a journey you never knew would happen.  Thanks for coming along on this journey with me…it is good to have companions on the way!

130: The world is going to sleep…..

admin November 8th, 2008

.......I had this thought when I was driving home the other night.  Fall is here bigtime, in fact, it is going into phase two already—the rainy part.  We had a wonderful indian summer here in the NW, as I rather expected after the coolish summer we had for the most part.  But now the hush of winter approaches, and as I drove home, it seemed to me that the world was snuggling in for a cozy nightcap, shedding all the extras and froufra for a nice long winter’s nap…and I got excited because to me that means most of the yard work is at a minimum, and I can get to the sewing stuff!    I haven’t been sewing as much as I would like, and that makes me kinda blue…I have not been feeling well lately, and I think it is either because I spent too much time trolling the internet looking for Quilt Market news, or the stress of another retail 4th quarter is hitting me, or my current 98 mile a day commute, or the two (now) trips to the ER for some sort of allergic reaction I have been getting…I finally am getting to an allergist soon, now I am just pretty afraid to eat anything…(great diet plan, not!) but ENOUGH whining already Scott!

Today I have some random shots for you from some things I have been working on…or collecting….or whatever….so here you go:

the part of me that was at Quilt Market.

a great flag that Linda made for me for last Christmas or the Christmas before….

pages from the journal I started in 1001 Journal project  someone else is adding to this now, and I am excited to see what others add to my little book…..HOPEFULLY I will really get it back…sometimes these things get lost….

a great turkey from Dover  and another batch of turkeys from Pokey at Quilting Arts:      I am thinking I have to do something with these…I love them…Real turkeys, I guess, can be quite the nuisance, but I hear about them a lot, they don’t seem to be here in the NW, but someday…I do have the neighbors peacocks infiltrating our yard sometimes….beautiful but annoying creatures….mainly the peacocks and sometimes the neighbors ….  :o )

a snippet from my wife’s and my friend Elaine over the mountains in WA state.  I just noticed she calls me Mr. Mabel in her links…cause she found my wife’s blog before mine!

a cool black and white photo found in a standard clip art set and the Blue Nickel version below:

and finally one of the round robins that I signed myself up for is ready to go to its next round.  This quilt will belong to Denis in Canada when it is finished…this is from my all guy quilt round robin project that we have been doing for over a year now…

My part was the last border around the circles…it was applique, and well, I take forever on that sort of thing…so I was way behind on this round…I have another one to work on today…I am almost done with it..no applique, so much faster for me!....

so that is it for now…still feeling “restless” and not sure about a lot of things ….as Linda calls it I feel rather “scribbly” inside…...Hope all is well with you out there and that your “nestling in” time is just grand!  And don’t forget leaving comments always cheers one up….it’s nice to share….
