Good Morning World!

Good Morning World!

Back to the Splendid Sampler!

It’s been awhile.  But I am ever so grateful that from the get-go, Pat and Jane emphasized that this journey would be one that you could take at your own pace and not worry about keeping up.

I had a great start, but have not been great about keeping up!

And here I am, giving the Splendid Sampler crew ANOTHER Block to catch up with!   🙂

I thought it would be fun to start off the new year with a hopeful and anticipatory note. Good Morning World! is inspired by the constant state of renewal we find ourselves in EVERY DAY.

So far without fail, the sun comes up.

And by the time that day is settling down, another day is starting on the other side of the world!

I know that on some days, it can be pretty hard to see the truth in that. Some days can start out very bleak, and sometimes they end even bleaker.

Still, every day is a fresh start. A new day to say good morning to your family, your neighborhood, your city, your world!! A chance to start again.
I have had many days when that has been agonizingly difficult to believe, and I am sure you have as well.

But they keep coming, another day to start again. And again. And again. And now we have another year to start fresh as well.

So Good Morning, World! What adventure will we embark on today?

And just like the sun comes up every day, the flowers come up every Spring too. They don’t always come up the same way or in the same place every year, but they come.

Those are some of the simple little inspirations behind my “Urban Folk”  sunburst/flower block.

The pattern for Good Morning World! can be found here on the Splendid Sampler site.

I  also thought that this post would be a great one to feature the Deco State Flower prints from In the Beginning Fabrics again.

These little bags are my favorite non-quilty thing to make. Here are some done up in Deco State Flowers alongside a sweet little vintage rocking chair pincushion that Linda, my wife, gave me for Christmas.

Here’s another view of my Pink and Green version of Good Morning World! along with the perky little mushroom pincushion Linda’s grandma made decades ago!

And my original Good Morning World! block in the colors of the sky!

I had a little giveaway of scraps from this line previously here.

NOW I have MORE to give away today on THIS post!! Leah at In The Beginning Fabrics sent this sweet little 10″ pre-cut bundle for you with ALL 50 states.
(so that means you will have 4 states that I don’t have!) Plus, I will throw in some more scraps from my bag-making with the 10″ squares.

I think the New Year is a perfect time to give away a bunch of flowers, don’t you?

So just leave me a comment here telling me what you think of my Good Morning World! Block or your favorite flowers or your plans for your fresh start in 2017.  Lots of options for you to choose from.
If you feel so inclined, feel free to follow me on Instagram and Facebook and invite all your friends to do the same!  I promise I won’t bite or send obnoxious junk mail!    🙂

I will draw the winning name for this some time after the 6th of January, and let the winner know via email.

That’s it for now!

Keep Sewing, Keep Happy,

  • Kathy E.

I adore your Good Morning World block! It’s the best way to start a new day, for sure. My favorite flower is the cleome and I hope to try out hexies and the Dresden Plate template in 2017! It’s gonna be a great year!

I love your fabric and the quilt pattern. Looks like a paper pieced pattern. I have been paper piecing for about 3 years and I am finally getting the hang of it. I am a little slow. I am looking forward to sewing this square thanks Elaine

Since my husband passed away Nov.22, 2014, I hope this year will be a little easier. Quilting is what keeps me going. He was a great fan of my quilting.

I think your Good Morning block is interesting. Yours look totally different than the one on the Splendid Sampler site. The same pattern in different fabrics always fascinates me with how different they look. In addition, if you rotate the pattern it looks different on every side.

  • Love the Good Morning World block, it’s wonky and bright and just like the sun! Plans for 2017 include finished some UFO’s, getting serious about finishing a quilt for one of my daughters, organizing my sewing room again..but in my defense it has been rearranged since hubby cut a hole in the top of my desk for my sewing machine to fit into….love it so much; I am in a compact small room and is wall to wall sewing and computer but I can maneuver around and that’s what counts…it works! lol

Have to work on rebuilding my stash, it’s really depleted! So I could use the winnings! lol

Love your block! Paper piecing is a lot of fun for me

    December 31, 2016 at 9:37 am
  • As Susan already said, I like how the block alters when seeing the pattern from different directions, and depending on the fabrics used. I can’t wait to get stitching!

In 2017 I seriously need to finish some of my UFO’s ….. especially my SS blocks!

I absolutely love old fashioned roses with layers of petals, and wonderful scents! I have a gorgeous rose plant …. a birthday present ….. received a few years ago, from my mother, which has lots of scent and the most beautiful deep black/red petals! Oops, sorry I went into one there!

I love all flowers so really don’t have a favorite. 2017 is going to be my year to clean up all the kits I have purchased over the years, my sewing machine will be humming!

  • Patricia Chojnowski

My favorite flowers are sunflowers and roses. Once I had a row of sunflowers growing next to my house and my neighbors horses got loose and ate the flowers up. She was so upset and kept apologizing, but I wasn’t upset. I had gotten to see my sunflowers grow and blossom and the horses got to enjoy eating seeds. I guess I am a easy neighbor to get along with. As for 2017, I’ve got a list of quits-wips to work on, plus I cross stitch and work on that when away from my sewing machine. Thanks for the lovely pattern. Going to go and figure out what splendid fabric to use on the square. It will be fun! Happy New Year to all!

Love the block and the use of state flowers to create them! The wonkiness of the petals do say ‘good morning!’ and make me reflect on the number of local flora – the poppy, passion flower, and morning glory – with whom we share a circadian rhythm. Often times we have a little trouble opening up that eye, or spreading our petals, but eventually we know we can enjoy and embrace the light of each day! I’d love to make a quilt using that block for all the state flowers!

My favorite flower is Queen Anne’s lace. I know it’s a weed, but that’s part of what makes it a favorite. It just pops up in surprising spots. What a fun block to start my new year sewing. I’m a firm believer in starting as you mean to go on each year. So, there will be some work on ufos and probably some cross stitching to start the new year.

    December 31, 2016 at 10:17 am
  • Very fun block! My favorite flowers are Peace roses and rubrum lilies. The state flowers fabrics will be great for a lot of projects!

Hi Scott, I find your block design very intriguing. I like the idea of a flower in the center of the block. My favorite flower is a rose, but I may look for a California poppy for the center since I an a Cali girl. Thank you for your design I look forward to make it in 2017!

What a great way to start the day! Good morning world! I’ll make more than one-I love this block and its message so much I’ll gift it to my kids (I’m thinking tote bag now that we need to carry bags for groceries here in CA) and a couple special friends who are a positive influence in my world. Thanks for a great start to today!

Love your block especially with the idea that every day the sun rises again and wipes away what may have happened the day before. I love to be up at dawn watching the brightness emerge on the horizon. Perhaps I could do the block in many “dawn colours”. Don’t think I have a favorite flower. Irises and pansies remind me of my family home, so let’s go with that. I have many projects planned upcoming and I will work on each as time permits and as energy and creativity allow.

Good Morning Scott! I love the randomness of your block and can’t wait to figure out which fabrics in my pallet will fit it best. As for the New Year; I am going to finish… so many quilts started and never finished, mostly because I can no longer hand quilt due to advanced arthritis. I contacted a local machine quilter and we are going to start the process of finishing… I so look forward to seeing over 40 years of starts become finishes!!!

My favorite flowers are spring daffodils. They are so cheerful looking! Thank you for the block and your description of what it meant to you. The chance for renewal and rebirth on a daily basis is very real and is a gift. It’s like we have New Year’s Eve every day. Every day can be a new step towards a better me.

I retired in 2015 and spent most of that year preparing for two weddings this year. Once they were done, I spent my time quilting Christmas gifts for all the family. My fresh start is to get some of my WIPs that I dreamed up for me, finished. So looking forward to getting in to the sewing room for myself. Would love these squares to increase my stash of pretties for the scrappy quilts I envision. Thanks.

  • Well, Good Morning Scott! Cute block! When I first saw it I was tilting my head back and forth thinking “interesting”; then realized that I was tilting just like a chicken/rooster does and thought what a perfect name for the block! It reminds me of a rooster’s comb as he is telling the world Good Morning. LOL…That IS meant as a compliment to the block. I know you only asked for a comment on one of the options, but you are getting the whole bunch from me today because of your block. My favorite flower is a daffodil, just because they are such happy flowers and smell divine. I am entering 2017 with a new perspective regarding my quilting endeavors. First and foremost is to finish all the current projects and get them to my kids and grandkids. Then I plan to ONLY take on fun/Happy(as in the daffodils) projects that I really WANT to do. No more stinkin’ messes; they must all be divine! And greet each day with a Good Morning World….WATCH OUT…Here I Come! May you have a happy and blessed new year in 2017.

  • One of my favorite flowers is the Blue Bonnet, which is the state flower of Texas! My biggest plan for 2017 is to do more quilting and types of quilts. I just picked up quilting a few months ago & have caught the bug. Now that I have my own little sewing studio along with a brand new quilting sewing machine (thank you Santa, er hubs) I’m set to go! Thank you for the chance to win!

Your post was fun and inspiring We all seem to have the same things in common-might be diff proportions but it’s all there. I love all flowers but I’m a black thumb person(sadly) but as my Mom used to tell me I’m just making heaven a happy place.I love iris from my years growing up on the East Coast of USA. Also love the lilac since it grew for me-amazing-with it’s lovely fragrance(which out here in very southern Calif has been said to be odd). I’m coming out of a 1 1/2 year dip in my feelings- am so ready to feel pleasure at life again. Thank you.

Thank you for the Good Morning World block. On Dec.15th, I fell on ice in a store parking lot, pulled my husband down with me, and broke my hip. So I have spent a very painful 2 weeks. But this block made me smile and think ahead to better days, and I am going to pick out my fabric today. ( I can get to my stash using my walker.) Lilacs are my favorite flower so I see purples and lavender. Thank you for the gifts you have given so many of us.

Every day is a fresh choose daily to have a positive or negative impact on your day. Start each day with a prayer and a smile. Fresh Flowers in a home provides color and positivity, surround yourself with it by using fabrics that mimic mother nature’s bounty. As for my plans for the new year, I am planning on positivity there also. Becoming more involved with church, going back to school, and learning something new daily. Work to create that which you want to become. Positive, hopeful, engaged and creative.

Just love the simplicity of this block. I love the choice of bright colours, there is no end of what one crazy quilter might do with the choices available to one. My eldest daughter thoroughly loves sunflowers. When I think about it, my daughters and I love totally different flowers, which is great . Each flower represents each of our personalities. I might just have to make a few of these to make different things with. Planning happening already in my head. Thank you for an inspiring block.

Happy New Year! Love the mantra and name of the block. It is exactly how I need to face the day. The tiny bags are so cute and intricate. The vintage rocking chair is awesome, especially since it also has room for spools of thread. I, too, love the weed Queen Anne’s Lace. i finally found my ruler to make paper piecing just in time! My goal is to finish some UFO’s. and start an applique quilt.

Scott, I love lillies. I love your good Morning block, but what I truely liked was your comment about each day is a fresh start and even partway through the day someone on the other side of the world is getting a new start. Great inspiration from a creative mind. Happy New Year to you. Thanks for the drawing for the fabric, some lucky person will be off to a great 2017.

Love the Bonus Block! I am still learning and so enjoy all the new techniques and ideas. I plan to learn to machine quilt in 2017. I have a couple of tops done and need to do the quilting. I am a bit nervous about machine quilting… but am excited to give it a try. Thanks again for sharing!

Love your block – however, when I first saw it, it reminded me of chaos, much like the state of our world today. Dandelion tos list of favorites as they are much hated by most people, yet they are strong, resilient, and quite beautiful if you take the time to look at them carefully.

Lilacs are my favorite flowers and didn’t grow in Las Vegas–we just bought a house in Illinois and there is a lilac bush right outside my kitchen window. I am going to be one happy lady in the spring. The giveaway is amazing–I have 2 quilts in progress with vintage embroidery of the 50 state flowers….

    December 31, 2016 at 3:24 pm
  • You gave me too many choices for what to comment on! And having a short attention span, I only remember the last one…So, for 2017, I am going to use up some of my stash and make quilts for charity. Notice I said ‘some of my stash….
At this point, I really don’t think that I can live long enough to use it all!

I adore your Good Morning block. I’m finally breaking away from the thought that everything in my quilting has to be symmetrical and “even.” It sure makes the art more free and expressive. And the colors? Oh be still my heart! Looking forward to seeing more. Happy New Year!

I love paper piecing. I am only printing Good Morning World as I am 3 days post knee right replacement and 6 weeks post left replacement. Obviously I am just printing the blocks for now, but fully intend to catch up, doing paper piecing first. I love the title, as despite my pain, I greet each morning as a new day. Looking forward to 2017, catching up with the splendid sampler and quilting more.

I have been printing out the blocks as they come out but haven’t yet made any of them. I love the variety of techniques used and look forward to learning as I make them.

I love your block with all the flowers! My favorite flowers are tulips, lilacs, and hydrangeas. In 2016 I learned to quilt. Still learning more all the time. I am hoping that 2017 will be my “fresh start” as I am learning to take time for myself & be more positive. Maybe I’ll go back to school or maybe I’ll take an exotic vacation or maybe I’ll just take a nap & dream about all the wonderful quilts I’ve seen & would love to create! Who knows? The possibilities are endless! Thanks so much!

I love your block. I have a sun design tattoo!!
My thought is “your day is what you make it” you can say good morning!! and jump start the happy…. or you can think “today is going to be bad” and it probably will be… I try to make every day Happy, smile at people I see, give a compliment to a stranger… It is easy to be “nice”. Spread the Happy. Your block is definitely HAPPY 🙂

I love your block, especially the blue background one, and the name of it. I know what you mean about having some bleak days. I lost my 88 yr old Mom, my 33 yr old nephew, and a 70 year old cousin, in August and October. Some days seem very hard to get thru, but the sun does come up every morning. I lose myself in making a block and think of the family i have left to enjoy. That makes it easier. My favorite flower is a rose. Thank you, Linda R.

  • My favorite flower is the pansy. Although it is awful fun to make snapdragons talk.

  • Wow! such a nice block – Thank you yes my favorite flower is the Dogwood flower – I have been enamored with the dogwood flower since I was a young girl, (I’m now 74), The tree when in bloom reminds me of lace…. I remember drawing a dogwood flower and using it as my logo or as it would be and emoji in this day and time. lol I guess I was ahead of my time. Roses are another of my favorite flowers- mostly because my father, a Gardner, had a passion for Roses.

I love flowers, would be hard pressed to pick my favorite. Maybe lilacs. I am living in an RV for the time being and am using only what I brought along which is mostly batiks. The sampler has been a challenge to myself to learn to be more precise, brush up on some skills in the end have a quilt that speaks to me only.

Hi – thanks for yet another great block – I love to wake up everyday and get greeted by my dogs and then I am off to get my grandchildren off to school – I feel very lucky and blessed – quilting is a great addition to my life.

I love this bright and sunny block. Thanks for your creations. I’m a pretty early riser, l live with my daughter and her family, and on weekends I get up early to drive my grandson to swimming and then go work out myself 🙂 I love the Colorado sunrises, and the gorgeous views of the rockies just set my days off great.

  • I love your block. And I especially love the words you have written to express why you made it, just so. I’ve been watching the Twilight Zone this weekend, from the 50s/60? , and they just had an episode where the Earth went off its axis and night never came. It grew hotter and hotter. It ended up being a dream. I prefer cold to hot, myself. I can’t pick a favorite flower, but love roses 🙂 Thanks for your generous giveaway! And a Happy New Year to you!

Challenging myself to a “no buy zone” for 2017 by using up what I have. (Yardage, scraps, UFO blocks, and my endless WIPs) This ought to be fun!!!! Will be using up some of that with all the Splendid Sampler blocks!

I love flowers and it’s hard to decide which is my favorite. My favorite smelling flower is the gardenia. It’s fragrance reminds me of my childhood. I love daffodils as they are the first spring flowers that come up in my yard. In summer, I love the roses and pinks. I love spider lilies that arrive in September and are our sign that fall is coming. I love your block and would love to have the pack of flower prints fabric.

Love your good morning world block. My goal this year is to use up fabric stash and do more improvisational work. I need to come out of my comfort zone

I love how everyone is putting such a positive twist on the new year. And I love your block. More sunshine! Afraid I am going to have to have that purple pansy on blue background print; it’s so pretty. Thank you Scott.

Your block is a great block! I usually like symmetrical and didn’t think that this fit until I looked closer. Then I realized that it had an order to it.

I think the Bonus Block is very interesting. Have not tried it yet since I haven’t taken down the Christmas stuff yet and brought out the sewing machine. The GOOD MORNING WORLD block will be first on my list to sew . Thank you for sharing.

Thanks for the chance to win! Fresh Start is my motto for 2017. It’s about walking more, eating less, sewing and reading. It’s about ME! Empty nest and learning to live alone. It’s not easy but I will grow to love it! Thanks!

Very cute block! I like how someone did it in black and white polka dot background with teal flowers! My favorite flower is a pansy to remind me of my mother and petunia to remind me of my Grandmother, both strong, beautiful women. 2017: I am not sure what to expect for the new year. both daughters have moved out so maybe now is the time to re-establish my relationship with my husband. I would love to finish a lot of UFO’s and travel more but will settle for just being happier.
    Happy New Year to you!

I love paper piecing your block. My new year will start off making one or two quilts fir my new great grandsons appearance in April. The next project will be a quilt for my nieces husbands aunt. In between I’m working on the Splendid Sampler for me!

I love this quilt block because you can use an infinite amount of fabrics in it and it will look different each time. The fabric looks pretty cool too, and winning it would be a huge bonus if you ask me so thank you! My plans this year are to complete 10 UFO’s. At my local shop, they hold a UFO challenge from Feb.-Nov. and one lucky winner gets a $100.00 gift card to the store. My other plans are to make a modern quilt, one that I design, and also to make an English paper pieced quilt, that is very challenging. I am getting to be a more advanced quilter, but haven’t made the leap to designing my own quilts, so that’s my goal!

    January 3, 2017 at 6:25 pm
  • Interesting background! Love unexpected color combos.

    January 3, 2017 at 9:17 pm
  • Your Good Moning World block is a great design – I can see it used in a baby quilt or a table runner. The bags you made are so pretty.

    January 4, 2017 at 6:31 am
  • My goal for this year is to take on more challenges and not to be stuck just on a specific pattern – be creative.

I think your block is very interesting and I love all the positive thinking you put into naming it. My quilting goals this year are to finish up previously started projects and start on ones I have wanted to do for a long time.

One of my favorite flowers is the hollyhock. They remind me of my grandmother. She had them growing along the side of the farmhouse. They were bright and cheery. When asked how she was doing, she’d say, “I’m on this side of the grass, so I’m doing alright!” Good Morning, World!

It’s a cool, crisp morning here in South Texas which is rare. A fine day to work on your block. A perfect way to start off the year. But, curious which is background on paper piecing papers? Odds or evens?

I love all the flowers but my most favorite is the daffodil. It’s so cheerful and sunny and I love to see their happy faces in the spring. And fabric with flowers from all 50 states? What a wonderful idea! I’d love to have them!

I like your good morning world block, I’m not sure if I have a favorite flower, maybe the one that is blooming when I see it, right now there are some lovely velvety purple pansies in my yard, I hope I am not too late to get my name in for the drawing, I love floral fabrics.
