Announcing The Splendid Sampler
I talked a little about the grand year-long adventure starting this month called The Splendid Sampler Sew Along awhile back. Here’s my first “official” post on the Blue Nickel about it. Already there are over 10,000 quilters joining this Amazing project dreamed up by Pat and Jane in which we will create two 6 1/2″ unfinished blocks a week with some weeks off for a break (or catch-up) eventually creating 100 individual blocks. Over 10,000 members and we haven’t even started posting the blocks yet. Amazeballs!
I was humbly blessed to have been asked to join the impressive list of designers on this journey — 84 designers in all, I believe. My actual block won’t show up until October 2nd this year. But I am hoping to present my version of each block as they are announced here at the Blue Nickel, starting with the first block that will debut next week on February 14th.
Currently the fervor over at the Splendid Sampler site and Facebook page is all about people’s fabric choices for the project. The Original blocks designed by each of the designers were done up in two different fabric groups from fabric we were sent from Moda for our block. I was given the batch below:
They have a wonderful modern country charm vibe, don’t they? There wasn’t enough for a whole Splendid Sampler Quilt, but I will create a little mini quilt from these fabrics featuring my block on its big day this autumn!
For my Big quilt with all (hopefully) of the blocks in the sampler, I started with choosing these four fabrics as a sort of base camp:
This picture seems to show the whites a tad “creamier” than they really are.
I really wanted to focus on the Greens for some reason. I don’t think I have ever done a quilt in all Greens, and I have been contemplating doing some “one-color” quilts for quite some time. I had resolved to start with just Green and White, but I did break down and add a hint of Pink. Probably because Linda’s and my wedding colors were Forest Green and Palest Pink so many moons ago. That wasn’t my first thought for this project, but that’s what it has morphed into.
I have quite a variety of Greens, don’t I?
This vintage circus one! Isn’t that the best?!
And because everyone (all 10k+ of us) has been chomping at the bit to get started, Jane and Pat gave us all the Bonus block below. Not part of the 100, but something to play with. They posted the directions for the Bonus Block along with a handy little block testing project here.
My version of the Bonus block (with total disregard for the color layout as usual)
Many of the designers of the blocks, myself included, have been getting instructions for the blocks ahead of the crowd so that we can help encourage and inspire the main group with some samples. There are soooo many different versions of these blocks already, it’s truly exciting! Here are some of the blocks that I have been working on to have ready when there time comes up. Nice “teaser” shot, huh?

Dear Scott, so love how you use color! It is always a class for me. I have so much green myself and love using it. Actually call some of it neutral. Was glad to see you are one of the designers. And thanks for the stack of teasers! This is such an interesting project and amazed at all of the people on board. Have a great day!
