Watch It Wednesday #6 Deluxe Edition!

Watch It Wednesday #6 Deluxe Edition!

today’s WIWT is a Deluxe version!  and yeah…It’s Tuesday, I know..but I think it’s Wednesday Down Under by now, so this one’s for you Land of Oz.  I couldn’t wait for Wednesday this week because you not only get a very interesting video, you get some Fabricy News Info too,  that I have been dying to tell you for a few weeks now.  So I moved it up a day…

because I can….it’s my blog and I can switch days if I want to….days if I want to….oops…different song…

The pictures scattered about here are some of the inspiration behind David‘s debut line….David who?  Read on, read on…..(or cheat and click on the hyperlink….I know 20% of you already did anyway)

Should I make you wonder for awhile with a bearably short story? okay,  Okay, I will…(sorry no choice here)

It started back at Quilt Market in Salt Lake City where I met the wonderful Lisa Lam.   She was so warm and friendly, we became friends over the internet since then.  She happens to design bags…..LOTS of bags, and so somewhere in BagLand she had become friends with Amy Butler, another serious Bag Lady.   Well, she was visiting Amy after Market, and then later contacted me telling me that David Butler, Amy’s husband, had this really creative project going on that was going to be fabulous. And she told him that she thought I would be a great collaborator….or something like that!  Well, we connected by email, but he wasn’t ready then to reveal anything, so all summer, I tried to not wonder exactly what this fabulous opportunity was.  Until now….David has his own line of fabric coming out this fall under his new brand Parson Gray.  The line is called Curious Nature….here’s a little peek.

He and I are talking about some collaborative projects, which are still in very early stages (the sample yardage isn’t even in the States yet).  We are both looking forward to the possibilities though.

David is a very creative individual, and has a huge body of work behind him already.  I thought it would be fun to interview him in my usual silly style,  and then I thought well it would be good for him to get even more exposure than my blog, so I am teaming up with my other gig Generation Q Magazine,  and sending you there for the interview.   But you have to stay here for the video and prize….yup…prize….this is a Deluxe Edition of Watch It Wednesday Tuesday, alright?  It would only be “special” without a prize!

So by now you probably figured out Dave is also a musician….you are sooo smart!

Here is David’s group The Black Owls in “We All Fall Down”  Black Owls videos are sometimes slightly R rated in snippets, so be forewarned.  The first image starts off the humor (and deep truth) that I see in their videos with the line “Everyone is normal until you get to know them”  so very, very true, isn’t it?

<object style=”height: 390px; width: 640px”><param name=”movie” value=”″><param name=”allowFullScreen” value=”true”><param name=”allowScriptAccess” value=”always”><embed src=”″ type=”application/x-shockwave-flash” allowfullscreen=”true” allowScriptAccess=”always” width=”640″ height=”360″></object>

What I love about this and all of the Black Owls videos are the funny little repeat sections…they make me laugh…. their music is not something I would listen to all of the time, but I like it once in awhile… Mostly I like it  because I know that David (and his band whom I don’t know) are having a great time doing what they love, and I think that is pretty wicked awesome… you know?

So there you have it David Butler,  Amy Butler’s true love, musician, artist, textile designer…and now my friend,  wow his life is so complete now, isn’t it??

Okay so you could make his life slightly more complete by liking Parson Gray on Facebook….

should we beg for comments to win a prize pack?  okay let’s….you have till October 11th to comment here.  At that time I will pick a winner, and when I get some Curious Nature, I will send you a scrap bag from the projects that I make with it, okay?  Meaning you will know that you win in October, but you may not get your prize for a month or two as the line is that new!!
To win, you need to go over to Generation Q and read the interview and then come back here and comment on something from that interview, like which of the two truths and a lie is the lie, or something like that….(and we also have a bigger sneak peek at the line over there too!!)

  • Love that line of fabrics! And I love that David doesn’t mind being Mr. Amy – that’s awesome. Lady Gaga might be the obvious choice for the lie so I’ll say that the lie is REO Speedwagon. Great interview. Opium dens…hee hee.

Very cool interview, very cool guy! But now I have “I can’t fight this feeling” and “Chris Cross’ll make you jump jump” stuck in my head. No closer to the truth!

  • “I admire their magic, beauty, inner strength and ability to fool people into thinking they don’t exist.” … … …. …. .. . I admire unicorns too and I’m sure they have a very Curious Nature.

    October 4, 2011 at 4:44 am
  • OK those are some really interesting fabrics so glad you introduced them to us….so much to see in the world of fabrics we never get around to it all it seems! Good luck to your future collaboration, will be cool to see!

Can David really like Christopher Cross?

  • Sharon B

I think I have it – Parson Gray is the “brand” of fabric and Courious Nature is the line of fabric. I can’t wait to get my hand on this line!

PS – my guess at the lie is Lady GaGa 🙂

  • What gorgeous tones to this line. It’s wonderful to see!

    October 4, 2011 at 6:04 am
  • David’s favorite sandwich is grilled chicken with pesto. Love the fabric so when you get it Scott, make something small so the scraps are big when you send them to me!

  • Kathy B

He snowboards, skateboards, mountain bikes, is in a band AND designs fabric??? What a man! Not to mention that he’s easy on the eyes too!! That Amy is one lucky lady!

    October 4, 2011 at 6:55 am
  • Love the interview….love the line of fabric….I also loved Christopher Cross {in the day!}…[I’d like to think that David does too!] 🙂

    October 4, 2011 at 7:19 am
  • The biggest secret he’s never told anyone…..hmmmmmm. LOL

    Loving the video….

    October 4, 2011 at 7:21 am
  • Love the fabric and can’t wait to see it in the stores! David has a family castle, has castrated pigs, and just maybe likes Christopher Cross. What’s not to love?

  • Nancy

wow…that is one crazy video! I want to know what “super fine” bbq is? it sounds cool…

my guess for the lie is Lady Gaga…

My husband has frequently mentioned that there are not enough “manly” fabrics. These are perfect. I see a new quilt as soon as these come out!

    October 4, 2011 at 8:18 am
  • Marcy

LOVE the fabrics. Remind me of his Black Owl video–snippets, shadings, silhouettes. Hope it feels as great as it looks. I’d love to work with it.

    October 4, 2011 at 8:18 am
  • Great interview! It sounds like they live a really peaceful and creative life. I don’t know which one is the lie ~ maybe liking Lada Gaga?

    October 4, 2011 at 9:46 am
  • I really love the fabric line– and like someone else said can see making a guy’s quilt from this! I enjoyed reading his interview– pretty neat to “have” a castle, live in the country and hang out with peeps in the city 🙂

So I’m thinking it’s got to be Christopher Cross….or have the unicorns managed to disguise the truth from us too? Loving the idea of occasion music leads, I have found several musicians and bands that I love from blogs and my kids are so impressed that I even know them! Thanks for the fun interviews and updates…and give aways too!

  • Terri Hume

Well first off, I love the fabric line absolutely gorgeous,(great line for a quilt for my husband) then second, I never would have thought my hubby would have liked anything Lady Gaga but he does like some of her music, just not to crazy about watching her as she sings it!!! lol, so I think maybe David is kinda sorta like my better half!

    October 4, 2011 at 10:20 am
  • It’s nice to know that David doesn’t mind being “Mr. Amy”, and that he isn’t afraid to kick everyone out of his castle….
Looking forward to getting to touch some of this Curious Nature!

    October 4, 2011 at 10:22 am
  • I’m guessing GaGa is the lie. Because REO Speedwagon is awesome.

Love the new line and really enjoyed the interview over at GenQ Mag. Thanks!

    October 4, 2011 at 10:23 am
  • Tess Holland

First, I must say that I am loving all the work you guys are whipping up over at GenQ! I always look forward to reading whatever is new for the day. I’m guessing David’s lie is that he likes Christopher Cross, since I have no idea who he is. I’m looking forward to seeing the new fabric! Looks great!

    October 4, 2011 at 11:13 am
  • I don’t know which of the three was the lie… but I do know that I would love to be able to say I had a family castle back in Ireland! (…anywhere, really)

I think Curious Nature looks great and I’m excited to see what other fabric lines he comes up with in the future 🙂

I actually liked the music & video a lot more than I expected I would!
Interesting about Kilkeeny Castle-I visited Ireland in 2004 & went thru Kilkenny Castle-little did I know the connection! Not that I had ever heard of the Butlers at that time!

    October 4, 2011 at 12:28 pm
  • What a fun interview! I like David’s sense of humor. Since he’s a product of the 80’s like me, I’d guess that he doesn’t like Lady Gaga. (even though I like her eclectic style) The music video is cool…especially the dancing ladies and I’m not talking ballerinas. I like the punk beat of The Black Crows. I saw The Cure in concert in the 80’s and the Suburbs as well. Punk has a special place in my heart. Just went over and like Parson Gray…and Curious Nature…whoa…masculine mod…love it!!

  • Jill

I love the new line and the (not so) silly interview. I just can’t see Christopher Cross though – the other two fit I think – so choose me, please.

    October 4, 2011 at 1:15 pm
  • LeslieC

Christopher Cross is the lie – and like Mr. Amy, my husband doesn’t mind being Mr. Leslie sometimes (even though there is nothing REMOTELY famous about me)!

    October 4, 2011 at 2:24 pm
  • Heide

Oh my gosh. I need this fabric. Like, really really really need it.

    October 4, 2011 at 4:49 pm
  • Great interview and I love these new fabrics!! My pick for the lie is Lady Gaga.

    October 4, 2011 at 5:42 pm
  • Well! I suppose he likes Lady Gaga but I’d like him to like REO Speedwagon and Christopher Cross. Who knows? I definitely like the Parson Gray as a brand name, and you right. He is very good at naming things! Would love a sampler bag of Curious Nature. Love Amy’s fabric line too.

    October 4, 2011 at 6:14 pm
  • I’m guessing Lady Gaga is the lie.

    Or perhaps Opium Dens. 😉

    October 4, 2011 at 6:52 pm
  • Dianne

I’ve been to the Castle in Kilkenny and the vision of David lounging on a fainting couch is…well….hot! There I said it! Amy is one lucky lady and so will we be when this line launches! Okay I am off to like Parson Gray on Facebook! Thanks for the opportunity and the interviews!

    October 4, 2011 at 7:01 pm
  • Carmen Wyant

I have to agree with you on the music, although I LIKE Lady GaGa. So I think the lie is Christopher Cross-I don’t care for him really but REO rocks. So….

    October 4, 2011 at 8:08 pm
  • Dawn Nelson

I’m not sure what to say except “WOW”. If I could ask a question of David, it would be “Do you ever sleep?” because it doesn’t seem possible that anyone could have enough days in a year to do all you do.

    October 4, 2011 at 8:45 pm
  • Thanks for the interview. Very interesting. Funny to have dead sticks in the house!

    October 4, 2011 at 11:19 pm
  • Tsigeyusv

I think the lie is that he told 3 truths!
    Nope….one is a lie….and that’s all I am saying…

    October 5, 2011 at 6:54 am
  • I think Lady Gaga. I also wanna know more about opium dens….!

    October 5, 2011 at 9:48 am
  • Carmen

Soooo excited to see David’s fabric line! Have been loving & creating with Amy’s fabrics for awhile now and am thrilled to see David’s designs. Such talent! Have to guess Lady Gaga, although….

    October 5, 2011 at 10:31 am
  • I’m pretty sure David digs Gaga whether he admits it or not. I know I’m diggin’ this fabric line! More grey. YES!

    October 5, 2011 at 2:22 pm
  • Jodi Guerrero

Great interview. Sounds like David has a great sense of humor and a knack for coming up with great names. Black Owls, an Amish punk band ? Grabs your attention for sure. “Mr. Amy” did a great job on his fabric design, beautiful! I think the lie must be about Christopher Cross.??

Thanks for a great interview, giveaway and a chance to win.

    October 5, 2011 at 4:45 pm
  • Are “he is hot” and “lucky Amy” suitable comments? 🙂 A man who designs fabric and castrates pigs… Does he have a single brother?
Great interview and thanks for the opportunity! I think the scrap bag should continue your Aussie theme and come down under to me!

    October 5, 2011 at 6:39 pm
  • Suzanne

I love the fabrics – I sew quilts for the three men in my life (husband and two sons) and the current fabrics out there are soooo girly…these are perfect. I did read the interview and I chuckled at his lounging on the chaise at Butler castle…how I wish I could “go behind the ropes” at some of these historic places and just pretend I lived in that time for awhile…I’m thinking of the era of Jane Austin!

    October 6, 2011 at 6:20 am
  • MarciaW

Guess I’m on a different planet as am clueless – except I don’t like anything Lady GaGa – so will go with that as the lie. Now, is it a scrapbag that I can win, or a castle with my own fainting setee? Great fabric with a great name!

    October 6, 2011 at 6:13 pm
  • amorette

the lie has to be christopher cross, right? lady gaga is just truthy enough.

    October 8, 2011 at 12:54 pm
  • ‘Amish punk’? Loving that phrase. Am now wondering how many different things I can preface it with.

    October 9, 2011 at 2:18 pm
  • David loves to write fiction.

    October 9, 2011 at 2:32 pm
  • Peter

Castrating pigs and driving combines. Mr. Amy is quite a guy. Inspiring for us manly quilters.

    October 30, 2011 at 1:12 pm
  • WOW – you made him choose between chewbacca and yoda!? That’s a tough one…I would have to lean towards Yoda myself but Chewy is pretty fantastic too…

Great interview- terrific to get some insight into David’s design process & his creative journey. Funny as well, you can tell that you guys had fun with the interview & now I’m hoping that he doesn’t REALLY like Christophor Cross (surely not? Right?). Thanks for a fab & informative piece.
