#Durathon giveaway and a little bit of Africa….

#Durathon giveaway and a little bit of Africa….

So today, I would like to share a little bit about the Durathon Iron that the great people at Hamilton Beach sent me to review back in February….I can’t believe it was that long ago already (although I still do have even OLDER things to share with you eventually!)

Durathon 1

I didn’t really need a new iron, my old one was fine, but I did kind of like the idea of the retractable cord on the Durathon, so I said go ahead and send it.

Durathon 3

I love  the retractable cord on this iron just as much as I thought I would.  So much tidier…..and you all know I could use all the help I can get in that area!!  I also REALLY, REALLY like the way the settings light up with different colors from Blue to Red the hotter you go…..I know, I know….. simple little color things like that delight me even if they don’t have a lot of different “functionability” than my other iron.  It is easy to see what setting it is on that way. I haven’t tried the steam function, but I rarely use steam.  To be honest, I was also really impressed with how smoothly the ironing surface glides across the fabric. The coating on this one seems to be a couple of  notches above my other other one.

Durathon 4

Oh, and I photographed it with some fabrics that my friends at Clothworks sent to me awhile back  from their African Savannah collection.

african savannah 8

And of course I had to make  some little bags designed by Monica (the Happiest Zombie on the planet) out of this line of fabric!

african savanah 6

I love the “grasscloth” like “solids.” I think that it will go with many other prints and solids in the stash! I don’t normally go for the animal fur prints, but I think these will go great with the bright florals I normally work with.

african savannah 5

And here’s the best part! The grand folks at Hamilton Beach not only sent me this iron, they want to send one of you a Durathon Iron as well!  (Prize  will go to US addresses only please)
All you have to do to win is comment on this post. I will pick a winner sometime on April 22, Earth Day!   So comment away.  Let’s make this entertaining for all of us by sharing your favorite Easter/Passover/Springtime/Earthday memory, okay?

Love the iron I always need to know of good ones cause when one goes you need a new one NOW my best Easter memory is my first year of college I knew my mother was making me a outfit so I came home with just personal items and wore my sisters cloths the rest of the weekend She still reminds me of how she hated that

  • Thanks for sharing the review of this iron! I’ve never heard of it before, but I love the idea of the retractable cord! They make everything with retractable cords in Japan and it’s the best!

I don’t know if I have just one favorite memory since I tend not to remember things that well, but I do have fond memories in general of celebrating “O-hanami”, which is basically “flower watching.” In Japan this typically occurs when the cherry blossoms bloom and it involves getting a tarp/blanket and having a big potluck picnic under the blossoms (it usually also involves a lot of heavy drinking …).

My favorite Earth Day memory was 25 years ago when my wonderful daughter was born. She was my first and only and has been a true blessing. We always kid about her Earth Day Birthday. I love hearing iron reviews. I had bought myself a “good” iron just before Christmas, but have since dropped it and it doesn’t seem to be working like it should anymore. Hmmmm. Don’t you hate it when things like that happen and there’s no one to blame but yourself?

Is the iron heavy….? Light…? It would be nice to know about the steam feature, even tho you don’t use it many of us do. Do you know how much water it holds, oh yea…you don’t use that feature. Nice to know about the retractable cord…thanks for that info.

Susan, I really can’t tell if it is heavy or light. That is probably all in the eyes of the beholder. To me it felt to be of “average” weight. I did add a link to the Hamilton Beach site in the post, so you could probably find out more about the water details there I am sure.

  • My favorite Easter memory is dying eggs with my brothers and sisters. My mom would set us up outside at the picnic table and leave us to it. We always ended up with blue or green hands, and that was ok.

I don’t think I will ever forget the Easter I spent with extended family when I was little…maybe 4? We went to this fantastic park for a picnic/BBQ and spent the entire day. Being around family was wonderful but of course I was most impressed with the playground. It had a storybook theme and I was in awe! Imagine getting to play in the Old Woman’s Shoe! It took years before I quit expecting to have Easter there again.

I love your little bags! I have been looking for a new iron and wouldn’t mind trying out this one. I think my favorite Easter pass time was decorating the eggs — I used to draw mini designs on individual eggs for each family member and used them as place settings. That was long ago!

One year when I was about 7 or 8 (early 60’s) we spent Easter with our grandparents in a small northern MN town. There was a party at the movie theatre with a free movie and egg hunt. I was lucky to find one of the two golden eggs and won a big basket and stuffed bunny and had my picture in the newspaper. Great memory.

I have not found an iron that I love. I get the most frustrated with them turning off about the time I am ready to use it. What kind of time in the automatic off does this one do? I like a cordless one for my piecing iron but I have yet to find one that I like for my bigger ironing projects, borders and whole quilts. I would love to give this one a try. Hope you pick me!!

  • One of my favorite Easter memories was during my first year of college, when I was away from home for the first time. I flew from my school in Idaho into San Francisco Intl airport, where my sister picked me up. (I was VERY glad that I was flying with a friend from school who told me ahead of time that it would seem like we were landing in the water!) Then my sister, my niece & nephew & I drove her “automatic shift” VW bug down to SoCal, racing along up & over the ‘Grapevine’ at a top speed floored, of about 30 mph!

Love your new animal print bags – they look great! And I could do with a new iron – especially since it’s blue!!

There are so many Easter memories. Being married to a Pastor, it’s the highlight of the year. Easter Sunrise service, Easter brunch (so many wonderful cooks), Late Service, then home for Easter baskets and the whole Easter ham dinner etc. I have a new granddaughter so it will be so much fun to start the traditions through anew.

We buried my Father the day before Easter so that year was memorable for completely different reasons.

Some of my favorite memories are of making my kids Easter clothes. I had never sewn growing up, but realized that we were too far away from department stores where my husband’s job took us, besides, being too expensive to purchase mail order. So I decided to try making them myself. For many years I would try something different as each child was born, like the one piece toddler boys romper with piping at the bottom of the yoke, with a shirt and bow tie, so cute! My daughter was never tired of the colorful outfits I made for her, because I could adjust them to fit her exactly and we could buy whatever material we liked best, especially bunny or cat patterns. Then we started making 18” doll clothes to match the holiday dresses. Good memories.

My favorite Easter memory is when my 2 year old daughter discovered that the colored balls she was looking for really had hard boiled eggs in them, when she dropped one. Her expression was priceless.

I really need a dedicated quilting iron. This would be perfect! Nice color also!

Unlike you, I could actually use a new iron these days. Thanks for sharing this review. I’m glad I came across your blog. I think it will be a new favorite!

  • I love the idea of a retractable cord as well.
My funniest Easter memory shows my stubbornness. I was about 8 or 9 and had gotten a, I thought, pretty dress with little tiny strawberries on it. The dress was springy and had no sleeves, I thought it was the most beautiful dress, particularly when paired with my perfect white sandals, also new. I awoke on Easter morning to find knee high snow covering the ground, I refused to alter my Easter wardrobe and as a result was unable to join in the egg hunt and ended up freezing the whole day. But hey, I looked good.

  • Oh, I love the color of the iron and to hear that it’s a good one too is a bonus! My favorite Easter memory is always having Easter dinner with my cousins and getting to sit at the kids table where we would laugh and joke and generally get it trouble for being too loud. Good times and great memories.

I absolutely loved egg hunts as a child. Now I try to make them special for my grandchildren.

Oh, I would so love to have an iron like this. The one I have is heavy and getting harder to use as my arthritis gets worse!

I’ve heard good things about this iron. My iron is on its last leg, so for my next iron I’m going to try this one.

Great iron! Great fabrics too! Nothing really stands out in my mind about Easter other than the traditional Easter egg hunt inside the house. My parents made it real easy since they really didn’t like the idea of hiding eggs – my Mom was afraid of them being out of the frig… LOL
    Thanks for the giveaway.

I absolutely love Easter and I always have & I have dyed eggs every year for darn near 60 years!! One of my favorite memories is that of my dad & I making an Easter egg tree out of a root section of a tree at our cabin. Dad helped me varnish it & I still get it out every year to decorate. This beauty is 47 years old. Thank you for this wonderful giveaway.
