Valdez Quilt Festival

Valdez Quilt Festival, Mystery Quilt

Valdez Quilt Festival

Hey there, I just want to share a little bit about my fantastic trip to Valdez, Alaska for the biennial Valdez Quilt Festival the first week of September.  (photos are all from my iPhone – some better than others!)

The scenery was so sublime!  Valdez is perched on the edge of Prince William Sound just due east of Anchorage.  The Sound is surrounded by mountains that practically drop right into the water. Valdez is on a little flat bit in one corner of the Sound.

I was honored to teach four classes at the Festival.

I got to enjoy seeing students work on the following projects from my pattern library:

Twister –

Beauty in the Bark –

Painted Forest – (the only group shot I got of students and blocks from class – I am not too good at remembering these things before people pack up)

And Christmas 1964 –

The Mystery!

And in the middle of it all was the Mystery Quilt Class to which I was given the chance to join in the fun!

We had to have done some homework, but didn’t really know what we were up to. There were a TON of flying geese units – that’s for sure!  About 100 people all sewing this together. It was great fun to be a part of the class!!

I was so excited to finish this I couldn’t wait to put it together when I came home. Note all of the fall/autumny colors in my “old” color scheme of country plaid browns!

Here is the great wall of quilts that they have up during the event and for the big finale evening on Saturday Night.  So much talent in these quilters!

And here’s a parting shot from the plane leaving Valdez. Loved the patterns in this quarry like place from the sky. Lots of rock and gravel in a glacial area. I loved the shapes in this last view.

That’s it for now. Keep an eye out for the Big Tie One On Blog Hop (September 22-September 30) starting Tomorrow just before my Tie One On fabric arrives in the stores IN A FEW WEEKS!! I gathered a bunch of old and new friends together to play with the line and create a great many things that I cannot do on my own. It takes a creative village people. Oh, and did I mention that all of my friends will have prizes on their posts?  So be sure to pay attention!!

Keep Sewing, Keep Happy,
Scott
