Flit and Bloom Blog Tour

Welcome to my day on the Blog Tour for Patty Young’s Flit and Bloom!

I was so glad to be asked to be part of Patty’s Blog Tour, I always love the chance to play with new fabric, Right?!

First a little bit about Patty that you may not know. We have known each other at least 10 years I think! We met when she was just starting out designing fabric but had been doing Mod Kid clothing designs for a time already I believe. She and I share a deep love for Coconut M&M’s and also a deep grief that they are no longer manufactured. When I discovered them and found out Patty liked them just as much as I did, I would bring her a package or two every Spring Quilt Market, because it was always right around her Birthday!

Anyway, moving on to the fabric and what I did with it!  Great Bright colors in this line, and very much Patty’s colors. They remind me of her early work in the palette, but the scale is much smaller than back then and I am loving it. Even though I have just featured them as a collection here, I can easily see them going with other stuff in my and your stash! You can read more about Patty’s thoughts on the line here – I didn’t realize it was her 20th line of fabric already! WOW, Time flies!!

And in advance, I had to take these pictures inside for this with as much natural light as I could, but there some photos where I could not get the “yellow” out as much as I wanted.  I am sad, 🙁  but the show must go one.   🙂

Play Time!

So I thought since the holidays are upon us that I would take Flit and Bloom and do something Christmas-y with it.  So Voila! Christmas 1964. This is one tree from my pattern that you can get here as a PDF or in Local Quilt Shops if they stock my patterns…. if they don’t then let them know they can get them from Brewer and Checker Distributors!   One tree makes a great wallhanging!

I also thought that I would sew one up in what I call the Cedar version of my original Tree (which is more like a  Douglas Fir).  When ever I teach this pattern as a class, usually at least one person puts the branches on upside down. I think it looks totally viable as long as they are all sloping down instead of up.

But then as I was messing around with this on the design wall, I suppose you could do it this way too. Which I would call the Wonky Version. I am all for Creative Design Alterations!

Often my piecing methods create extra scraps, and I am not fond of waste, so I made some 6 1/2″ scrap Improv blocks as well (kinda like I did in this post – maybe I will make a whole scrap Improv quilt someday!!) I love just looking at these just sitting on the design wall.

Then I also made some of these handy little Fabric Baskets from a tutorial by Ayumi over at the Pink Penguin. They look great in Flit and Bloom!

They are handy to have around to stash stuff in, and or have on hand to give a gift in too – much better presentation if done right – and useful after the opening of the gift too!

Love how you can turn the branches in either direction. Or both directions. Off to read some of the other blogs on the tour.

Love the Christmas 1964 pattern, the bright colors of Flit and Bloom are beautiful! This pattern reminds me of the silver trees with the rotating color wheel, my grandma had one on her porch for years. Peanut butter M&Ma’s are my favorite, lol.

    Thanks for sharing!

  • I absolutely love Patty Young’s Flit and Bloom fabric line! I like your Christmas 1964 blocks but I love the baskets you made with the scraps because I need the storage so much and you’ve inspired me to make some.

As a side note, I just want to thank you for not being afraid to state your belief in God on your website and IG account. I really appreciate that! “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile.” – Romans 1:16 NIV
