New York Beauties & Flying Geese Blog Tour

New York Beauties & Flying Geese Blog Tour

Hey there,
So happy to be coming to you today on my friend Carl Hentsch‘s  Blog Tour for New York Beauties and Flying Geese, his newest book!

I think the first time that I met Carl in person was at Quilt Market (no idea which one or what year). We were talking, and he showed me a “few” ideas for quilts that he had for Generation Q Magazine where I was the Community Editor for about 5 years. “A Few” patterns that he had designed…..hahahaha!…If there is ONE word that I ascribe to Carl it would be PROLIFIC!! I was overwhelmed by all of his ideas. He had a ton! And really had just started playing around with quilt design.

Of course there are more words than just one to describe Carl. Crazy Talented comes to mind. And his very Agreeable nature. Carl is one of the most likeable guys on the planet (maybe I am just saying that because he laughs at my jokes – even the not so funny ones!) And with this, his third book, I would probably have to add Masterful!

Okay to be honest here, I have not actually READ the whole book, but I did read the intro pages by both Tula Pink and Carl, and I was very intrigued not only how these two good friends (of very opposite personalities) met and how they collaborated on this book. Carl really learned a lot from Tula about Color Science (yeah, I made that term up I think).

As my part of the Blog Tour, I thought that I would share a couple of my favorite projects – Ok, they are all pretty much my favorites, but these came to the top of the pile… All pictures except the last one are courtesy of C&T Publishing BTW.

Here is the quilt Pandemonium — such lovely deep saturated Blues!

And other dark saturated one, but much more ahem….low volume….. (my thoughts on THAT term are a whole other post!). This one is called Floating Orbs.

And here is Twin Dragons – I am seriously loving the movement in this one!! And the colors!

And then there are all of the Pillows!! BRILLIANT idea to include pillows in this book!  The circles so easily lend themselves to sampling the techniques without the large commitment of a full quilt. To be honest, that is probably all that I will get finished from the book. And I am just fine with that!

Here is a pink beauty from the Rust Pattern.

And here is a Floating Orbs pillow in great neutral, earthy colors.

Here below is as far as I have gotten on my attempt at one of these blocks – using Spirit Animal by Tula and little Red geese from Splendor by Amy Butler! Note, I am also using the Shark Applicutter by my buddy Rob Appell as well….pretty cool tool for this job! I am pretty happy with the results so far. I am NOT a curved piecer normally.  Watch my Instagram feed for updates on my progress on this project!

+++++++++++

AND to sweeten the deal,
Why don’t you leave a comment here at the Blue Nickel as well, and I will choose one winner to win some scraps of Tula’s Spirit Animal and Amy’s Splendor.  I will draw a winner next week, but I very likely will not be able to ship it out until after Quilt Market.

Drawing is now closed. Our winner is Jeifner — who wrote: “A New York beauty is on my quilt bucket list. One day…maybe with this book. Fun otter” Thanks for all of the comments and just being you in general!

That’s it for now…..a TON going on here…. Market is in 2 1/2 weeks and I have more work to do!

Keep Sewing, Keep Happy,

Scott

Love this book! The blue quilt with solid color wheel type geese glows, and I love how you used the flowers for the center of the circle. Gorgeous!!

I’m not really a curved piecer either, but these designs are so beautiful that I’m up for the challenge! Perhaps I could do “just one” to start as the center of a medallion quilt.

I would love to try one of these pillows — perfect for all the bright fabric scraps I have saved (accumulated? stashed?? hoarded?!?). Of course, would love to win your scraps as well — the more the merrier 🙂

A pillow/cushion is a very good way to check colour placement and whether you are actually getting the piecing right. Well worth including.

Thanks for the chance to win a copy of this book. I’ve been looking for ideas for a quilt for a physician who has been important to our family, and I think Twin Dragons is a good jumping off point.
