INTERMIX by Erin McMorris

INTERMIX by Erin McMorris

I am happy to share with you today some sewing ventures using Intermix by Erin McMorris. Free Spirit sent me this line awhile ago and I tossed and turned over what to make with it.
I really wanted to make some placemats and even designed what I thought might be a fun concept, but the prints and colors really didn’t go with our dishes that well.
But I did come up with some fun free online projects from other people and one project adapted from one of my patterns.

When I was looking through the prints in the line, I really got this feeling of a late 70’s – early 80’s vibe.  My favorite print has to be Britta in Sprig. My second favorite would be the rows and rows of succulents in pots – Terra also in Sprig, but Terra in Petal would be right in there too!  The Finn print is soooo 1980’s!

I enjoyed reading about Erin’s Inspiration for Intermix here. She describes this collection as coming from all sorts of places.  When I read her post, I said to myself “OH, THAT’s why these are together.” I originally couldn’t see a theme to things, but now it all makes sense. What is really nice is that most of the prints will play nicely with other prints in my horde of a stash …. carefully curated historical textile collection.

So for the project of my own designs, I adapted my Hugs and Kisses No. 9 pattern. I created three large “Hug” blocks from the pattern and put them together in a runner.  I quilted them with an “X” pattern similar to the “Kiss” blocks in my pattern. I used a scrap of wool batting that I had, but I think the loft was a little higher than I should have  used. Don’t look too closely at the quilting, I am not extremely skilled in that area. But in spite of feeling that way about my quilting, I did it anyway! Can’t get better without practice, right??

Next,  I made my version of the little gift bags you have often seen here many times before. I NEVER get tired of making and  giving these!

That being said, I may have found my new favorite. These handled baskets from Ayumi at Pink Penguin were so fun to make. She also created the fun little long skinny Organizer Basket that I made in three different lengths. I think they are great too, but I couldn’t get mine to be as square as hers were. They seem floppier than I would like, but I still think they would be good for organizing thread, floss or ribbons.

Intermix is out in the stores now, So be sure to get some of it for your own projects before it is too late.

OR you could comment on this post to have a chance to win this bundle of fat quarters of Intermix!

Just tell me what you think about the line or let me know your favorite trends from the 70’s or 80’s!

I will draw a name from the comments and send an email to the winner next week or so.

Keep Sewing, Keep Happy,

Scott

I came of age at the beginning of the 70s, so to me it’s the time when I learned to take a stand, love good music, and begin to discover the world. Blue jeans, flannel shits, and sweatshirts were my wardrobe staples, all enlivened with a bunch of creative embroidery.

What a fun, eclectic bundle of fabrics! I was born in the early 80’s, so I don’t remember much of the trends, but some of my favorite photos are those of my parents when they were dating in the 70’s. Center parted hair! Bell bottoms! Hippie lifestyle! Oh, and my dear old sewing machine is a ruby red 1979 Husqvarna and I love it!

I grew up in the 70-80 era and we were all about unique, clunky and funky. We were the generation of bright colors, earth mother, psychedelic posters, black lights, French braids, clogs, overalls and living in a time of community intertwining. Everybody knew everybody else…didn’t matter, race, color or creed. I love the grassroots brightness of this line. No Muddy colors just vivid down to earth..

The 70’s… Augh! Mostly an ugly decade (hairstyles, polyester clothes), but the colors were great! And the music was the best: Led Zepplin, Yes, Elvis Costello, Bob Dylan & The Band, New York Dolls… and the album covers were works of art!
