Good Morning World!

Good Morning World!

Back to the Splendid Sampler!

It’s been awhile.  But I am ever so grateful that from the get-go, Pat and Jane emphasized that this journey would be one that you could take at your own pace and not worry about keeping up.

I had a great start, but have not been great about keeping up!

And here I am, giving the Splendid Sampler crew ANOTHER Block to catch up with!   🙂

I thought it would be fun to start off the new year with a hopeful and anticipatory note. Good Morning World! is inspired by the constant state of renewal we find ourselves in EVERY DAY.

So far without fail, the sun comes up.

Every.

Single.

Day.

And by the time that day is settling down, another day is starting on the other side of the world!

I know that on some days, it can be pretty hard to see the truth in that. Some days can start out very bleak, and sometimes they end even bleaker.

Still, every day is a fresh start. A new day to say good morning to your family, your neighborhood, your city, your world!! A chance to start again.
I have had many days when that has been agonizingly difficult to believe, and I am sure you have as well.

But they keep coming, another day to start again. And again. And again. And now we have another year to start fresh as well.

So Good Morning, World! What adventure will we embark on today?

And just like the sun comes up every day, the flowers come up every Spring too. They don’t always come up the same way or in the same place every year, but they come.

Those are some of the simple little inspirations behind my “Urban Folk”  sunburst/flower block.

The pattern for Good Morning World! can be found here on the Splendid Sampler site.

============

I  also thought that this post would be a great one to feature the Deco State Flower prints from In the Beginning Fabrics again.

These little bags are my favorite non-quilty thing to make. Here are some done up in Deco State Flowers alongside a sweet little vintage rocking chair pincushion that Linda, my wife, gave me for Christmas.

Here’s another view of my Pink and Green version of Good Morning World! along with the perky little mushroom pincushion Linda’s grandma made decades ago!

And my original Good Morning World! block in the colors of the sky!

I had a little giveaway of scraps from this line previously here.

NOW I have MORE to give away today on THIS post!! Leah at In The Beginning Fabrics sent this sweet little 10″ pre-cut bundle for you with ALL 50 states.
(so that means you will have 4 states that I don’t have!) Plus, I will throw in some more scraps from my bag-making with the 10″ squares.

I think the New Year is a perfect time to give away a bunch of flowers, don’t you?

So just leave me a comment here telling me what you think of my Good Morning World! Block or your favorite flowers or your plans for your fresh start in 2017.  Lots of options for you to choose from.
If you feel so inclined, feel free to follow me on Instagram and Facebook and invite all your friends to do the same!  I promise I won’t bite or send obnoxious junk mail!    🙂

I will draw the winning name for this some time after the 6th of January, and let the winner know via email.

That’s it for now!

Keep Sewing, Keep Happy,

Scott

I think your Good Morning block is interesting. Yours look totally different than the one on the Splendid Sampler site. The same pattern in different fabrics always fascinates me with how different they look. In addition, if you rotate the pattern it looks different on every side.

Plans for 2017 include finished some UFO’s, getting serious about finishing a quilt for one of my daughters, organizing my sewing room again..but in my defense it has been rearranged since hubby cut a hole in the top of my desk for my sewing machine to fit into….love it so much; I am in a compact small room and is wall to wall sewing and computer but I can maneuver around and that’s what counts…it works! lol

Have to work on rebuilding my stash, it’s really depleted! So I could use the winnings! lol

In 2017 I seriously need to finish some of my UFO’s ….. especially my SS blocks!

I absolutely love old fashioned roses with layers of petals, and wonderful scents! I have a gorgeous rose plant …. a birthday present ….. received a few years ago, from my mother, which has lots of scent and the most beautiful deep black/red petals! Oops, sorry I went into one there!

My favorite flowers are sunflowers and roses. Once I had a row of sunflowers growing next to my house and my neighbors horses got loose and ate the flowers up. She was so upset and kept apologizing, but I wasn’t upset. I had gotten to see my sunflowers grow and blossom and the horses got to enjoy eating seeds. I guess I am a easy neighbor to get along with. As for 2017, I’ve got a list of quits-wips to work on, plus I cross stitch and work on that when away from my sewing machine. Thanks for the lovely pattern. Going to go and figure out what splendid fabric to use on the square. It will be fun! Happy New Year to all!

Love the block and the use of state flowers to create them! The wonkiness of the petals do say ‘good morning!’ and make me reflect on the number of local flora – the poppy, passion flower, and morning glory – with whom we share a circadian rhythm. Often times we have a little trouble opening up that eye, or spreading our petals, but eventually we know we can enjoy and embrace the light of each day! I’d love to make a quilt using that block for all the state flowers!

Love your block especially with the idea that every day the sun rises again and wipes away what may have happened the day before. I love to be up at dawn watching the brightness emerge on the horizon. Perhaps I could do the block in many “dawn colours”. Don’t think I have a favorite flower. Irises and pansies remind me of my family home, so let’s go with that. I have many projects planned upcoming and I will work on each as time permits and as energy and creativity allow.

When I first saw it I was tilting my head back and forth thinking “interesting”; then realized that I was tilting just like a chicken/rooster does and thought what a perfect name for the block! It reminds me of a rooster’s comb as he is telling the world Good Morning. LOL…That IS meant as a compliment to the block. I know you only asked for a comment on one of the options, but you are getting the whole bunch from me today because of your block. My favorite flower is a daffodil, just because they are such happy flowers and smell divine. I am entering 2017 with a new perspective regarding my quilting endeavors. First and foremost is to finish all the current projects and get them to my kids and grandkids. Then I plan to ONLY take on fun/Happy(as in the daffodils) projects that I really WANT to do. No more stinkin’ messes; they must all be divine! And greet each day with a Good Morning World….WATCH OUT…Here I Come! May you have a happy and blessed new year in 2017.

Every day is a fresh start..you choose daily to have a positive or negative impact on your day. Start each day with a prayer and a smile. Fresh Flowers in a home provides color and positivity, surround yourself with it by using fabrics that mimic mother nature’s bounty. As for my plans for the new year, I am planning on positivity there also. Becoming more involved with church, going back to school, and learning something new daily. Work to create that which you want to become. Positive, hopeful, engaged and creative.

Just love the simplicity of this block. I love the choice of bright colours, there is no end of what one crazy quilter might do with the choices available to one. My eldest daughter thoroughly loves sunflowers. When I think about it, my daughters and I love totally different flowers, which is great . Each flower represents each of our personalities. I might just have to make a few of these to make different things with. Planning happening already in my head. Thank you for an inspiring block.

Hi Scott! 2016, for me and the world, was in many ways a sad year. I’m trying to remain hopeful that this new year will bring more health, harmony, prosperity and peace for all. So, mostly, I love the meaning that you put in your Good Morning World block.

I like the little story about your block–Roses are one of my favorite flowers; my Mom had an old fashioned one in the back yard that had the most wonderful fragrance!

  • My favorite flower is the pansy. Although it is awful fun to make snapdragons talk.

    January 1, 2017 at 2:38 pm
  • Wow! such a nice block – Thank you yes my favorite flower is the Dogwood flower – I have been enamored with the dogwood flower since I was a young girl, (I’m now 74), The tree when in bloom reminds me of lace…. I remember drawing a dogwood flower and using it as my logo or as it would be and emoji in this day and time. lol I guess I was ahead of my time. Roses are another of my favorite flowers- mostly because my father, a Gardner, had a passion for Roses.

I love flowers, would be hard pressed to pick my favorite. Maybe lilacs. I am living in an RV for the time being and am using only what I brought along which is mostly batiks. The sampler has been a challenge to myself to learn to be more precise, brush up on some skills in the end have a quilt that speaks to me only.

I love this bright and sunny block. Thanks for your creations. I’m a pretty early riser, l live with my daughter and her family, and on weekends I get up early to drive my grandson to swimming and then go work out myself 🙂 I love the Colorado sunrises, and the gorgeous views of the rockies just set my days off great.

  • I love your block. And I especially love the words you have written to express why you made it, just so. I’ve been watching the Twilight Zone this weekend, from the 50s/60? , and they just had an episode where the Earth went off its axis and night never came. It grew hotter and hotter. It ended up being a dream. I prefer cold to hot, myself. I can’t pick a favorite flower, but love roses 🙂 Thanks for your generous giveaway! And a Happy New Year to you!

I love flowers and it’s hard to decide which is my favorite. My favorite smelling flower is the gardenia. It’s fragrance reminds me of my childhood. I love daffodils as they are the first spring flowers that come up in my yard. In summer, I love the roses and pinks. I love spider lilies that arrive in September and are our sign that fall is coming. I love your block and would love to have the pack of flower prints fabric.

Very cute block! I like how someone did it in black and white polka dot background with teal flowers! My favorite flower is a pansy to remind me of my mother and petunia to remind me of my Grandmother, both strong, beautiful women. 2017: I am not sure what to expect for the new year. both daughters have moved out so maybe now is the time to re-establish my relationship with my husband. I would love to finish a lot of UFO’s and travel more but will settle for just being happier.

I love this quilt block because you can use an infinite amount of fabrics in it and it will look different each time. The fabric looks pretty cool too, and winning it would be a huge bonus if you ask me so thank you! My plans this year are to complete 10 UFO’s. At my local shop, they hold a UFO challenge from Feb.-Nov. and one lucky winner gets a $100.00 gift card to the store. My other plans are to make a modern quilt, one that I design, and also to make an English paper pieced quilt, that is very challenging. I am getting to be a more advanced quilter, but haven’t made the leap to designing my own quilts, so that’s my goal!

One of my favorite flowers is the hollyhock. They remind me of my grandmother. She had them growing along the side of the farmhouse. They were bright and cheery. When asked how she was doing, she’d say, “I’m on this side of the grass, so I’m doing alright!” Good Morning, World!
