Good Morning, Afternoon, Evening!

For those of you new to visiting the Blue Nickel (as I like to call this site), welcome!
For those who have been coming for awhile, the next statement will not surprise you in the least.

I only had 10 + months to prepare for this post….So of course I started working on this mini quilt three days ago …after work at the Day Job … and with 3 or 4 other things all due at the same time!
Naturally!

In spite of that procrastination, it with great joy that I bring to you Bobbin Chase, my block for The Splendid Sampler.
Here are the fabrics that I received, oh, what? Last fall? — Yes almost a year ago….sigh….

They are wonderfully gorgeous Cottage Style prints from Moda. I love this stuff. They remind me of my Grandma Roggendorf even though most of her stuff was 60’s, 70’s stuff – she must have had some things left from the 30’s and 40’s that make me think of these.

I made two blocks last fall. One for one of the main quilts going into the book coming next year from Martingale. And one to go into a little mini quilt in which I would use up as much of the fabric Moda sent my way……The one I was going to start last Winter……. But only just started above said 3-4 days ago.

So here are six Bobbin Chase Blocks that I set on point, but did not have time to stitch together more than that.  Love how that plaid ended up in the center top one!

I created Bobbin Chase loosely based on what brought me to quilting – the path of which was a  loosely woven one. Pat and Jane asked me to join the Splendid Sampler Designer Team shortly after I lost my mom to cancer last fall, so I was, of course, immersed in thoughts of her. Mom didn’t quilt, but she sewed all of our clothes and was always working with needle, thread, fabric and floss. She helped me make my first quilt when I was in Junior High even though neither of us knew “exactly” what we were doing. Because of her work, I always admired art of a textile nature. How does this relate to Bobbin Chasing?  The little paper pieced sections remind me the floss winders I used for counted crossstitch before I started quilting.  I told you it was a loosely woven path.   🙂

This little doily below was in one of Mom and Dad’s bathrooms for years. After she died, Dad had a friend come help him go through a bunch of mom’s things, just to make life a little easier and less cluttered for him. This came to me, and I was glad because for years, I thought it was so intriguing and incredible. And look it is pink and green like all of my other Splendid Sampler blocks – I didn’t realize that until just now.

And this tattered pillow case cuff was one she made a long time ago. I know it is ULTIMATELY feminine, but I have always thought these pillowcase cuffs are SOOO romantic and cheerful. Makes me think of a very happy cottage where life is simple and full of beauty. I am not sure if I should frame this to preserve it or not, it is so tattered. What do you think?

Here are a few more closeups of my other Bobbin Chase block in the original fabrics.

Keep the pillow case cuff, frame it hang it with pride. It has special meaning to you and will bring back fond memories every time you see it. Besides, nothing in life is perfect and we are all a little frayed around the edges.

I agree, frame the cuff! I have some of my grandmothers crocheted things that I’ll pass on to my grandchildren and great grandchildren! Those things are so special!
