Jaybird Sew Along and Giveaway!

Jaybird Sew Along and Giveaway!

Jaybird 6

I stopped by to visit with my friends Sara and Julie the other day (check all of the other visits out too, Sara is hosting a bunch of reviews on Julie’s patterns and rulers)……okay Virtually stopped by, whatever…..that’s where I talked about the above runners made with Julie’s Seaside pattern. But today here is where I am going to give one of them away…..Just the top, you will have to quilt it yourself….but at least the piecing is all done.

DSC_1707

I also wanted to show you all of these little bags I made with a lot of the Jelly Roll leftovers. I can’t believe how much fabric was in that Jelly Roll!!

DSC_1708

All of the fabric in these projects were from one yard a jelly roll of  Joanna’s new line Mirabelle  (with the exception of that one fleur de lis stripe cream and tan print in the lining of that middle bag [and a few more]. That print is an older Michael Miller print). I am making a TON of these bags that will hopefully be filled with goodies from my many industry friends for giving away at Quilt Market and Quilters’ Affair coming soon.

So back to the giveaway.  Since this line reminds me so much of Peach Cobbler, leave a comment about your favorite fruit or fruit concoction or any story regarding fruit. I will draw a name sometime this weekend and send the winner one of the runner tops above. As I mentioned above the winner will have to quilt and bind it, but the piecing is all done for you.

And I have to get back to sewing and writing. I am almost caught up on my sewing, but my writing is SOOOO far behind. (and those of you waiting for the Quilters’ Affair patterns that I was going to have done months ago, I am eternally grateful for your patience. I am getting close to having them ready, but they are still not quite there….you are awesome for being so graciously waiting for them!)  (And this simple little post took freaking forever to get done…programs acting up etc…I need a faster computer…or I need to clean this one out {that is probably very true!})

I volunteer one day a week at the foodbank in downtown Seattle. Just this morning as I watched many clients leave with their arms burdened by whole watermelons I was struck by the realization of how really wealthy this country is that we can give away such fresh bounty (we also had apples, pears, acorn squash, potatoes and onions) to those who really need it and heart ache that there are other hungry people in this country we are unable to reach.

The best fruit in the world is raspberries. They are great fresh, in sauce over cheesecake, in yogurt, etc.

I just love any kind of berries, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, etc… thank goodness I have a big enough yard to be able to grow plenty. I really like how the house smells when I am making jam and jelly from berries!

Fruit concoction is something I have not had since I was a teenager. Strawberry/Rhubarb jam. My Mum would make this and it had such a twang but was always helped along by what went with it – YEP! Made into a cobbler. How did you guess. ggg Another would be her blackcurrant jam that when I had a cold it would be made into a good tea to drink. Really helped the throat. Purchased blackcurrant is not the same, unfortunately. Thank you for a really nice giveaway and to have the top already pieced it marvellous indeed. Ann in Colorado

When I was 5 and my brother was 6 we would spend a lot of time at grandma’s house. Her neighbor was an older lady who didn’t get out much. My brother and I would sneak around her house where there was an apricot tree and we would eat them fresh picked from the tree. We thought we were getting away with something, but I’m sure that older woman didn’t care, because as I grew older there were always apricots on the tree. No one ever picked them. Now as an adult I cannot stand to eat apricots.

I have three new wee little apple trees this year. They are new grafts off a very old tree that had been struck by lightning on the farm where I grew up. They are a small, very early apple in a glowing peachy pink just like your quilts. When I was a child, they were my favorite apples. I haven’t seen or tasted one since.

  • I was teaching at an outdoor education school in a remote rural area. That week we had kids from an inner city high school. Most had never been to a farming area and certainly hadn’t seen apples growing on trees. we were on a hike to a cave and the kids decided that they were more interested in picking and eating apples in an abandoned orchard than continuing to the cave. they brought so many apples back to the school that the chef was able to make them a dessert using them up.

My favorite fruit is fresh pineapple. Actually most of my favorite fruits are of the tropical variety. Somehow I think that when it comes to fruit I was born in the wrong country. I am just glad that we have them available in the stores here.

  • Hey Scott, good to hear from you. Like all of us, you sound busy and that is a good thing. I am a fruit junkie, be it pears, apples, peaches, plums, nectarines, oranges or berries off the bush and plant. We have our own orchard and berry patch so in the summer and fall we have an abundance of my favorite foods. I can, freeze, dehydrate and make jellies each year so we can enjoy the goodness when it is no longer available fresh. Thanks for a chance to win a flimsy, I can get that baby quilted in my machine in no time flat.

    LOVE this so much!!

There’s this simple dessert I like to make. You dump a can of cherries, pineapple in a glass pan, then sprinkle with coconut and walnuts (opt), then a dry yellow cake mix and cut up squares of a stick of butter/marg and distribute evenly on top. Bake for like 30 min or until top is browned. SO GOOD. Its so good warm or when it’s cooled. I can eat the whole thing in a few days, so I try not to make it too often.

But any fruit is good. I can’t think of one I don’t like. My Grandma used to make the best peach cobbler. Yum! I’m so craving dessert now. Thanks for the chance to win!

What delightful creations! I love the runners and the baskets. I teach writing and I once gave my students a writing prompt simply entitled “false fruitcake.” I got paragraphs about processed food, mystery stories, a romance, and reflections on shallow friendships and fragile family ties. It was fun reading! Thanks for this giveaway opportunity. I love the idea of a top pieced by one quilter and finished by another. What a treasure!

Love strawberries! My favorite is strawberry pie which I don’t get very often. First time I had strawberry pie, my grandma took me out to a little diner and let me order a great big piece. She used to tease me “do you think you can eat all of that by yourself”. I said yes I could but she helped me anyway. Now I always think of my beautiful grandma whenever I have strawberry pie! Thanks grandma!

However, I am also a blueberry lover and always have some in my freezer for pancakes and for on top of my cereal. Thank goodness my husband doesn’t like them … more for me!
