I hope you have enjoyed this series as much as I have! It was a lot of work, but I really was happy to share my love of how color and value changes the look of things with such ease. A lot of you have written so many nice things, and I can’t tell you how wonderful that feels. I think probably what I noticed the most in the comments was that some of you can get intimidated by the choices before you and that’s where you feel stifled.  I think that may be something I do different. I actually never really “think” to much about a block when I am doing it.  I do think “what if” a lot and then play with that, but I don’t overwork it.  As I said a few days ago, I sometimes like a “blurry” block. If the quilt is all the same block, those blurry ones add interest and get you to look a little deeper into the work to see what’s going on.  Also, I love color. A lot of color. You probably guessed that, huh?  When it comes to color, I look at it in a couple of different ways. Sometimes, I look at the contrast between Hot and Cold Colors. You know what I mean right? Hot colors are the reds, oranges, yellows, pinks.  Cool colors are the blues, greens, purples, etc. I also look a lot at the Value of colors, whether they are light, medium, or dark. That is a little trickier, and sometimes they don’t always work out the way I see them in my head. And that is probably the trickiest thing I do. I don’t let things bother me too much, I go with what feels right to me. There is no wrong or right when it comes to quilting.  I believe wrong and right are very important for a great many other things, but not quilting.  I have made plenty of quilts that later down the road, I wonder what was I thinking?

So after that brief look into my head, let’s go onto the last block.  This block is Pat Sloan’s block and her interview (questions were given to her from her readers!) is here, and her block is here.

Here is the Kona block done up in — in Stratosphere and Sunny (the points ended up differently than the original block totally by “mistake.” I was going to make a blue star on a yellow background, but when I plopped them down next to the sewing machine like this, I thought,  hmmmmm….and I tried them out that way. Fell. In. Love.):

D12days Kona12

Here is the third Anna Maria Horner True Colors  from Free Spirit Block (I am totally gaga over this shade of green, and the “coral” and black in the center…Incredible combo!):

D12days AMH3

Here is the fourth Blue And White from Michael Miller Block (I love the vibe from that deep Navy background….yep, even though it is navy, I love it!):

D12days B&W4

Here is the Grunge from Moda block (I was down to two browns after using all of the grunge sample colors I had, so I dug into the scraps for the rest this.  Love it! {note, in the corner four patches, there are actually three different browns…hard to tell, but it’s true!}):

D12days G12

And here are the Aurifil threads of the day (2880 and 2715):

D12days thread 12

So go ahead and comment as you have been doing. You have until about 1 pm on New Year’s Day Pacific Time.  Tell me about your New Year plans, your opinions on today’s blocks, colors, fabric lines, news of the day, etc. Love hearing everything you have to say.   And remember to come back to the Blue Nickel next year as well.  There will be a lot going on throughout 2014, and I can’t wait to share all the Love of Color, Fabric, and Threads with you!!

Happy New Year!

I’ll definitely be coming back next year, you’re on my link list now! I love playing with value when I make up my own quilt blocks, especially when I’m doing something scrappy. The sawtooth star is one of my favorite blocks and then there’s all the variations like this one which just gives more room to play. Great job making it hard to decide which block you made is better! Each one looks better than the one before.:)

I am glad that I found the 12 days of color on the last day. Wish I found it sooner. The blocks are gorgeous in all the different color ways. I looked at all of them and am very fond of day 12. I am a solid or reads as solid fabric shopper. One of my goals for 2014 is to spruce up my stash with some modern fabric prints similar to the ones used in all of the blocks. My other goal for the new year is to become more proficient with free motion quilting, in order to finish up some ufo’s. Thank you for the opportunity to see so many different fabriscs, threads and colors used in one place. Happy New Year!!

I have thoroughly enjoyed following along with your series of posts, albiet, I did it in one day because I just found your blog this morning!! I will be coming back here regularly in 2014 for the inspiration and to see the new things that I am sure will be unfolding. I am curious…what do you do as a day job?

The blocks are all really neat. I am liking the blue. Apparently I need to make a blue and white quilt. 🙂 I don’t really have many plans. Tonight my husband and I will probably stay up until midnight, if we make it. We have two year old twins, so it is difficult to stay up late as we are dog tired by 10 or 11. Wonderful prizes. Hope you have a happy new year!

I am really not confident when it comes to knowing/working with color values – your solids blocks were helpful in showing me different values at work. I’m working on not thinking of my work as “wrong” if it doesn’t turn out like I envisioned it…it just means I learned one way of NOT doing it, ha ha. Thanks for the fun series. Have a nice NY’s Eve!

Happy New Year, Scott! Thank you for your lessons on color. Sometimes I think that I over think my color selection. I’m going to try to loosen up a little in 2014. I’ve enjoyed seeing all of your blocks and reading about your designing process.

  • this was a great series. Loved seeing how colour and placement makes such a difference in a wide variety of blocks. I belong to a very traditional guild and light is for the background and floral fabrics for every thing else. I really try and shake them up with my quilts, but it is an uphill battle. I think I am making some headway though.

new years is quiet this year. A bottle of caramel vodka, Criminal Minds re-runs and some knitting. Tomorrow a chicken fabric pillow case for a young friend before she heads back across the country to university.

I want to learn more about color values and need to get some of my stash used up so that i can buy some of the new modern fabrics. 2014 will be a year of learning to just do it and not to over think the fabric choices. Thanks for all you did to share all the possible color choices for the blocks. Happy New Year.

  • Scott , this has been a great series. Thank you so much for sharing what the different fabrics(colors) can do for a block. Block one is a total different spin on this one that I didn’t see coming. Happy New Year and believe me I will be keeping an eye pealed on you in 2014.I love the grunge block, not sure I would have paired pastels with the warm colors but it is out of this world. I have certainly learned a lot about what color can do to a block through my bombs this month but don’t enjoy remaking them so watching what 4 tries has done for you has been very valuable!!! Thank You

This has been an awesome series! I think color combos and placement had been overwhelming sometimes for me. I’ve loved seeing all the different blocks. Being a visual person I know what I like when I see it but not always sure how to get there. I seem to fall back into my comfort zone choosing colors and I guess I need to play more. I will be coming back again and again to these 12 Days of Color to review and for inspiration. Thank you Scott for all your hardwork and Thank You to the wonderful sponsors, Aurifil, Michael Miller, Robert Kaufman and Moda. Wasn’t the color of today’s Aurifil threads yummy? Beautiful blues!

Have a Happy, Safe and a Blessed New Year!

Interesting though, how you swayed me towards the solid blocks too, cause they were never really my thing. But now, I may just have to branch out more! Hope you had a great Happy New Year!
