Gooseberry Patch Blog Hop.. Stiching in the Kitchen!

Gooseberry Patch Blog Hop.. Stiching in the Kitchen!

So you know that I get books to review every once in awhile, and sometimes I like them, and well, sometimes, they don’t even get to the blog because I think they are so silly.  When I first started getting those emails, saying do you want us to send you a copy to review, I would get all giddy over the “free” aspect. But I have been learning that sometimes it doesn’t really help them or me or you, so I have been trying to be more selective.

Today’s book Stitching for the Kitchen by the folks at Gooseberry Patch probably would not be one that I would rush out to buy personally just because I don’t do a lot of this type of sewing, but I think some of you might like it. There are a lot of cute projects,  some may be more “country” than others, but some look very useful, and many have this 1970’s vibe that has some pretty good “feel-good” memories for me as well (think Holly Hobbie, Little House on the Prairie that sorta thing)

There are 30 projects in the book. Some are simply embroidery projects and some are more complex sewing projects.  My favorite projects are as follows:

The modern country monogram embroidered napkins:

I am not really sure how they are “modern”  and “country” but that name kinda rolls with my Urban Folk style, so it must be why I like them!  These are done on store bought napkins, but they briefly cover making your own for the project.

And the next project is the embroidered tea towel project.  Very nostalgic to me, but still classic.

I know, I know…..the first two projects are embroidery ones, and I never find the time to do that right? I think it must be because I love the look of embroidery, but never seem to have the patience for it! 🙂

Now this Owl Teapot Cozy is one of the cutest projects in the book I think.  I am not too crazy about the felt eyes and beak, but the overall design is great. I would be tempted to actually try this one even if I don’t have the time….

And I think my favorite project is this divided bread basket. But I didn’t have time to make it up for this post.  I can see Linda’s scones in here…well, not for long, but it would be nice for awhile!

But I did have just enough time to make up this plastic bag dispenser.  We really need more than one of these around here.  And it is so much better than the pile of them jammed in between some shelves in our storage room!  And Heather Ross’s Briar Rose seemed to have just enough of that 70’s vibe to do the job.

I do have to mention that this book really isn’t for the novice sewist.  You need to have some experience sewing for these projects as the directions are pretty minimal in my humble opinion.  And unfortunately in the project I picked to do there were some measurement errors. But they were minor, and it was simple enough for me to adjust things.

Oh, and my friend Pam has the same day on the tour as me! And she did the other project that I thought about doing, but didn’t talk about here….so that’s even more perfect! So be sure to visit Pam today too!!

So that about wraps this post up…..except for this bit….. guess what? The peeps at Gooseberry Patch want to give you a copy too!!  So go ahead and leave a comment here to win. Just tell me what you like to stitch for your kitchen, even I didn’t touch on it in this post. I will draw names sometime after the 5th of August.

I love to sew for the entire house, and since we just moved….that means a whole new house to sew for! But the kitchen, pot holders, dish cloths, seat cushions, aprons, tea cozies, dish cozies, mascots, chef hats, assistant chef hats, etc. I would absolute LOVE to have this book to get old and new ideas for the home, my home, my new country home! Thanks for the chance to win one, fingers crossed, toes too, lol Arlene Marie Pitts

  • Hi Scott! this is why I always follow you! never know what you maybe up too! Well, I visited a few places so far on the blog hop after you told me about it! So thanks! I love all the projects I saw and I love the chicken in the first picture best and would make that first! Always need bag holders, pot holders and they make great gifts, so a few of those would be made! I would make a bread basket because my husband makes great rolls and the projects looks really cute to hold them say at Christmas time! I am pretty country so I see this book getting used a lot! So who knows maybe I might win!
    Thanks for the giveaway!

I always like to embroider towels for my kitchen….short, sweet, and I can swap them out seasonally if I want to! I like the bag holder…we have a really tacky (tapestry, not my style AT ALL!) one I hide….but now I can whip up a cute one and ‘lose’ the one I am currently stuck with! LOL

Since I have recently started learning embroidery (which I must admit that I’m completely hooked on!!) I would love to do the embroidered napkins, think how sweet they would look on my country table with friends over for brunch! So of course I would have to make the fabric scone basket as well, and of course an apron to wear too!! The possibilities are endless!! I would thoroughly enjoy this book!!

I haven’t embroidered in years! Did some dish towels back in the ’70’s …. oh yeah – and jeans! with lots of curly cues and mushrooms and flowers! But from this book – I think that the first thing that I would make would be the plastic bag dispenser…probably at least 2! The plastic bags are taking over the cupboard under the sink! And escaping!
