228: Final Quilt Market post…maybe

Hey you all!  thanks for all the great comments here lately….it is good to know that I am not completely writing to the wind….  I think I actually do have some more Quilt Market posts to do…but I really needed to get things caught up around here….So I posting this post tonight and with it another set of  prizes.  And while I am typing this I am printing out all the comments from the last 3 or so posts that had prized attached and will be announcing them tomorrow or Wednesday in another post.  I don’t really have a lot of time tonite to post either, but I wanted to share with you some more highlights from Market…

First on the list are the Westminter Laminates….these are just incredible.  When I heard about them, I definitely thought of thick bulky oilcloth….These are NOT that material!!  They are very pliable and sewable it seems…

And to prove it…Look at this!!  Ruffles! out of Laminate!  Can you believe it?  I couldn’t ..even a rosette.  Everyone MUST try this now!!  Really….

Back over at the Seven Seas booth where all the fine Japanese Imports were….were these cool little kits….aren’t they the yummiest assortment??

And little wind up felties…too cool!

And Heather Ross’s newest Line with Kokka….Far Far Away II….

But the REAL highlight for me was meeting and chatting numerous times with Anna Maria Horner….

This lady TOTALLY amazes me.  She designed all these fabric and these projects….and she has 6 KIDS!! From 18 to 1!  AND she is as sweet and genuine and thoughtful as she seems in her blog.   I would have to say that her blog is my very favorite for the way she mixes family and design and pain and laughter.  My heart is often stirred by her musings on parenthood.  It is such a wonderful and difficult and ultimately fulfilling and draining  life work…and Anna Maria captures it all …..surrounding it with beauty as she goes….including her now famous Quilt Market Spring ’10 shoes!

Here she is smiling on the last day just as much as the first day!!

Yeah, I really enjoyed meeting her here at Market.  My first quilt for Free Spirit was for her Good Folks line,  and then I did a Flannel Little Folks quilt  last year for Free Spirit too.  I have emailed her on numerous occasions, and generally made a pest of myself…and she was still nice to me here in Minneapolis!!

And then there were her equally charming and beautiful model/assistants…. Allie with her Incredible Red Locks and Charming Smile…

And Alexia with her Stunning Snow White features and Gentle Grace….

One more thing before I go to the prizes for this blog post.  Anna Maria lives in Nashville, and saw many of her neighbors lose much during the flooding they had there this Spring.  So she has this going on to help…I will talk more about it later, as I am psyched to help out on this project.  But I wanted to make sure you knew about it as well if you felt inclined to help with the effort.

And Anna and I put together these little gifties for 3 lucky winners….A free pattern from her newest book Handmade Beginnings and some of her flannels and prints….and two little notebooks…(the third prize gets a little extra flannel)…

For this project why don’t you tell us all about your first memory of something that someone made for you as a child…not bought in a store, but made by hand or with their hands for you. And when we get somewhere between 30 and 50 entries, I will start drawing names randomly.

And I promise I will get winners of all the previous prizes announced tomorrow evening my time (Pacific) so if you are on the East coast it may be later for you….

Are you still enjoying these market Photos??  I still have an SD card full of Floral pictures from around the Blue Nickel Studios here to share that I took before Market…so eventually you will get to see them too…

Thanks for dropping by the Blue Nickel…..see you soon!

Scott

  • I’m a huge AMH fan so thanks for the great giveaway.
I always remember my mum making all my fancy dress costumes as a child.
I wish I had appreciated her efforts more at the time!

  • my first thing i made was in home ec class in junior high, i made a big teddy bear that i stuffed, my first time using a sewing machine. man i loved that thing!! my mom would not pay for the kit, so my friends mom did, but then it had to go to her house, when i was an adult, i went and asked if i could have it, she said no which made me sad, i even offered to pay for it, i just wanted to pass it on to my daughter, but oh well. thanks

  • The first thing I remember someone making was a huge ‘life size’ back then (although with my height some would still say it is still life size) doll with big brown eyes and brown yarn hair, dressed in funky 70s clothes….I still have her too!

Thanks for letting us continue to share your journey!

  • Those wind up felties are too much! Love it!

My Aunt Peggy made me a clown – I remember the plastic head and then she crocheted (I think?) the arms and legs. It was yellow and white stripes and I kept getting in trouble for sucking the paint off of the clown’s nose. I believe I was 3 at the time!

  • My mom made me a blue gingham dress with apples that were smocked across the bodice wich I wore to get my pitures made in kindergarten. I loved that dress!

  • My first memories of handmade things are both involving my paternal grandmother. She used to make me and my little sister matching outfits – which my mom would put on us and then take us to Olan Mills for pictures! I also have memories of a crocheted afghan that Mimi made for me. It was always on my bed.

Thanks for all of the great giveaways!

I can’t believe I missed those little wind up felties at market! So cute!

I have her book, so please don’t select me to win it, but at the same time, I thought I’d comment on the first thing someone made for me. While I don’t necessarily remember it, I’ve seen pictures of several outfits my mom made for me as a small child, with her in a matching outfit, too. Kinda fun, kinda corny!

My mom used to make a lot of clothes for us … I remember my Catholic school kindergarten uniform – a brown polyester (prickly) jumper, with a gold blouse. And I remember a rust-coloured wool sweater – also prickly but I liked it. Later my mom took three years to knit a beautiful lacy angora cardigan – a prized possession! Thank you for the giveaway!

I remember my Mom sewing for me as a child. She really struggled with it & it took forever, but she persisted! When I wanted to learn how to sew, she sent me to Singer-I think she knew she wasn’t cut out for it!

  • As a kid I always wanted to learn to sew…we moved a lot and I never seemed to get to take the home ec that included sewing and in 7th grade I was really bummed that I missed sewing class so my grandmother agreed to help me sew a shirt. I picked out this hideous pink plaid stuff (I loved it at the time, and it retains its place in history since it was the shirt I wore in my 7th grade picture) and a pattern and Gram and I cut it out. The day we were to sew it together I got in trouble for something and was sent to my room (at Gram’s cottage) and I could hear her Singer sewing away without it. I cried and cried and didn’t get to sew a stitch, or learn to sew until I was twenty! So my first memory of something someone made for me is a bit bittersweet, Gram was rarely upset with me and I did wear the shirt with pride anyway.

  • I can vaguely remember a flannelette bunny costume. My mom must have made it. Later there was a blue knit poncho that my grandmother made. My older sister received a gold one and my younger sister celery green. I’m sure I have mine in the basement stored in a box..

While I know my mother made me lots of things before this but I don’t remember them, the one that stands out is a pink mohair cardigan that my mother knitted for me. Oh how I loved that sweater, and how I loved watching her knit it. I still have the sweater. No, it doesn’t fit now, but I just can’t let go of it.

  • First, yes, I am enjoying your market photos! As I said, it is fun to get another perspective and info on the various designers.
When I was five, our whole family (I have eight siblings) arrived at my grandparents home on Christmas Eve and my baby doll was there sitting on top of a shoe box filled with clothes my grandmother made for her. It included a purple velvet spaghetti strap evening gown!! Yes, for a baby doll!! She was incredible. I still have a few pieces of doll clothing she made.

  • My mom sewed most of my clothes when I was little. I remember one outfit she let me choose myself. The shorts were bright yellow with white huge dots. The top was white with huge yellow dots. I wore it the first day of 2nd grade. And thus my fate as a nerd was sealed forever….

Then there was the 8th grade dance dress with HUGE puff sleeves and giant roses…

And my first formal dress in glittery velvet….

But, not all was great. She sewed one skirt that was fluorescent orange, blue, and green. It was awful. (Sorry, Mama!) I couldn’t bear to wear it, so I hid it in the bottom of my closet. Two decades later, I fessed up an apologized. That was a weight off my nerdy shoulders! Hah!

You’re inspiring me to post something on my blog…. now if I just knew what to write… 🙂

  • Oh my gosh, you’re making me jealous! As if the laminate isn’t fabulous enough… Anna Maria is such a gem. I love her blog too! As for my first memory of a hand made gift… my mom used to sew for us a lot… holiday and seasonal dresses, and Halloween costumes. She made me and my best friend Little House on the Prairie aprons and another mom in the playgroup who had 2 boys made us matching bonnets. Everything was pink and and decked in ribbons and eyelet and we were in heaven!

Oh I’ve been reading your posts. I love the pics your showing. I am going to be looking for some of the new laminated fabric since you said it was so light and easy to work with. I was thinking about the old table clothe type stuff and thought oh no not for me. One of my first sewing projects was in Jr high. We had to make a skirt. Never did wear it, it was so ugly. Then I finished my cousins skirt because the first time she used the machine she stuck her finger under the needle and would never use a sewing maching again. But we had loads of fun in the class cos the teacher didn’t really care what we did!

  • Love all those photos! Those wind-up felties are adorable.

My mom sewed a lot for me and my siblings when we were kids. She had 3 girls, and always made us matching dresses for easter. We were quite the sight with our bonnets, gloves, and little purses! But the very first thing that was made for me was a bedspread (not quilted) made by my grandma and all my aunts (mom came from a family of 11 kids!). It was a simple patchwork, and each square had an embroidery transfer that was colored in with fabric paints. My grandma made one of those for each of her grandkids (36 of them!). I still have mine, though it’s in pretty bad shape after all these years. I’m hoping to restore it one of these days, and maybe turn it into a proper quilt.

My earliest memory was a quilt my grandmother made, completely by hand! She belonged to a quilting guild and gave all the grandchildren their own quilt, in colors we chose. Count me in on AH’s giveaway please – I admire her creativity and enjoy using her fabrics and patterns — such an amazing artist!!

  • My first memory of something handmade was a dress that I had my picture taken in when I was little. The dress was made by my grandfather for my Mom when she had been little. It was a blue floral print with red rickrack.

  • I can’t pinpoint when I received my first handmade item because it was when I was a baby, but I remember at night staring at and reading ALL the time an embroidered sampler my Grandma made for me with my name and birth information on it. Definitely has to be the earliest.

My mom started sewing when I was a toddler, so she has made a ton of handmade things for me since that time. I can’t leave her out of a comment talking about handmade items for me!

My mom would sew clothes for me and my doll on occassion. I had five brothers and one sister already out of the home, so I was a wee bit spoiled. The things that stand out was a coat for my doll Rapunzel, with a fur collar. It was just gorgeous..she was such a seamstress! Then she made mother/daughter dresses. Now this was in the 60’s ok, and ruffles right down the center of the dress was acceptable for both kids and adults. Hers was long sleeve and mine short. Very plain cut, but I loved that ruffle!
Granny with the green rug, (that’s how we differenciated between the grannies….the other was granny with the piano), gave me an embroidered hankie. All these gifts were while I was 5 and under….I still cherish that hankie…I should do something special with it….any ideas? So, my earliest handmade with love gifties….great memories!

  • Oh please keep your quilt market photos coming! Love it. Makes me almost feel as if I had been there!

My favorite/first memory of something someone made for me was from my granny. She made me an apron out of organdy. It was a light lavender color with lavendar gingham ties. The best part though, was it had a lady embroidered on it for the pocket, and her dress actually made the pocket. The dress was from the lavender gingham also. I so wish I could find a pattern similiar to it, but so far have not had any luck with that:(

    Hugs,

  • When my mum was pregnant with my younger brother (I was around 2) she made me a patchwork quilt, all sewn by hand, out of old clothes I’d grown out of. I used it every day and all through college until it got ripped to shreds in a faulty washer. So sad.

The first thing I recall being made for me is a cross stitch picture of a little girl with a teddy bear. My mom made it for me which is a really big deal because she is not at all crafty. It is the only thing I ever remember her making. It hangs in my bedroom and I cherish it very much!

  • Both my mother and my grandmother were avid crafters. My grandmother was particularly fond of sewing, where as my mom was into needlework and knitting. My grandmother made me many clothes in my childhood..including some underwear with numbers. I’ve never forgotten about them! :o)

Underwear with numbers!? what a hoot!! thanks for sharing that, Jane!!

  • I, for one, am still enjoying your market posts. They make it so seem so thrilling.

The first thing I remember that was made just for me is a clown made with yo-yos. You know the ones where the legs and arms are made with stacked yo-yos? One of the things I loved best about about it is that it smelled like my grandmother. This is important because my mother died when I was 4 and I had a blankie, the clown, a Raggedy Anne doll and pajamas that I always made sure were with me or I couldn’t go to sleep. I’m sure these things helped me adjust to life without my mother.

Gee, I don’t know how I missed this post the first time! The one thing I remember someone making me when I was younger was Barbie clothes. My mom made me all kinds one year for Christmas. I don’t know how she found the time, or how I didn’t know about it, because her sewing machine was out in the open, and I walked by it every day, several times a day. I always loved those clothes, because my Barbie had outfits no one else did!

The first thing I remember was a purple smocked dress that either my mom or my Grandmother made not sure which I was so young. I loved it because I could twirl and the skirt would go way high. It was a little girls dream come true.

I have been blessed to be in a family full of sewers. My Dearest Grandmother would sew us (all 20 grandkids) presents for Christmas every year she always personalized each one. Even if she made stuffed rabbits for everyone each one would have its own personality. Her gifts were the most precious gifts I ever received.

Remember those octopus made out of a ball of yarn? There was a ball in the middle and 8 legs braided sticking out all around. Someone, I don’t remember who, made me a purple one. I proudly put it on my bed with the legs spread out just so and the goofy eyes looking at the door so I could invite my friends in and say nah nah look what I got. But then pretty soon everyone had one so nah nah on me.

The first thing that I ever made was a small, hand sewn fleece quilt. When I got married I moved several hundred miles away from my friends and family and I missed my kid sister terribly. So I spent the next month or so stitching *tiny* little squares of fleece together and then hand quilting little scenes with all different colors of embroidery floss over the finished quilt… what a labor of love.
