184:It’s in the details…

Today I have just a few pictures for you, and  a little snippet about details.  I always seem to notice details…sometimes, I think that is good, sometimes I think it drives others crazy…..particularly when I “correct” someone about the details that I seem to think are important.  I guess I do that a lot….Linda tells me I do..and I notice at least a couple of my kids do that too, so they must get it from me…

Anyhow, here is an example of some of the details I notice.  I was folding up this wonderful Full Bloom fabric from Bari J Ackerman, and I started noticing the selvage.  Look at that delightful little rose in the selvage…and the unique font style of the words “full” and “BLOOM” each in a different color for each print.

baris name  A lot of people would say “big deal, Scott, it’s selvage, it gets tossed anyway”  But I just had to think, wow, if Bari put that much of a design element into the selvage, she must really love designing.  For some reason it makes me appreciate the work she puts into her ideas even more…That is not to say that other designers who just use standard type with no illustration in their selvages don’t care about their work, I guess I just felt a little bit more of a kindred spirit with Bari on that detail….I dunno…probably just me rambling again.  But I felt strongly enough about it to share this picture I took, which by the way kinda yellows out all of Bari’s beautiful prints (sorry, Bari)…..this particular light over my ironing table isn’t very good for picture taking….

Okay onto the next detail.  This quilt below is over at Fons and Porter magazine HQ right now getting ready for publication….so that is why you don’t get to see much more than what you are seeing.  What I wanted to share with you was this error I found while I was dropping it off at my friend Becky Marshall’s for long arm quilting.

bad lantern bloom seaming
I was at Becky’s dropping it off for quilting, and within the overall design of this quilt (which you can’t see yet) it may not have been that big of deal, but I just kept thinking…this is going to be in a magazine, and I just can’t have my name on it with that glaring of an error. So I made it better…better Lantern Bloom seaming The corners don’t meet Perfectly, but it is much better than the way it had been.  I am hoping that there weren’t any other errors.  I am not a perfectionist when it comes to quilting, but I do think that you should do your very best, and I couldn’t just let it go the first way.  This quilt features Lantern Bloom by Laura Gunn, and it came out quite nicely, even though for the life of me, it seemed to take forever to get finished.

Here is the binding going on.  I love this part. I find it relaxing and so full of completion.  Well, when there is a deadline, it is not quite so relaxing, but generally I do feel that way about it.

binding threads

Well that’s it for today’s posting folks. It is pretty busy around Blue Nickel Studios these days.  Some top secret projects I can’t announce yet are being worked on (oh, about 3 or 4 top secret things at once….you know the usual!), and Free Spirit just asked me to work on another sample quilt…this time using flannels.  I am not too hot on flannels in general..but this line is designed by Anna Maria Horner….so I mean really folks, how can I refuse?  I simple LOVE Anna’s work and a couple of the prints have little houses and deer….I mean they are so cool, and I am crazy about architecture in general….you will just have to wait and see; they are delightful.  And then there are the end of summer things too.  Max and Mimi are off at camp for this whole week. It has been so quiet with just Noel and Linda.  Noel will be starting Running Startthis fall and taking the county bus everyday to community college as a Junior in high school…wasn’t he just starting Kindergarten last year??  Oh, and this Sunday is Linda’s 5oth birthday party with family and friends here at Shiloah Cottage….

so yeah…we’re busy here…what are you up to??

I remember my grandparents house had a couple huge bushed of those lantern flowers growing around it, so they always make me think of them. Thanks for those memories.

  • Love the selvage details. I probably wouldn’t have noticed the color change, but the little flowers, yes. Love us some Bari! Looks like you’ve been having fun!

  • I love selvage. I have run across a few patterns where they make things out of selvage – what a cool thing!
